Hopefully Lowell has made some changes to his 701 dashes. The one that I got had several problems. The plastic around the hole for the ignition switch was too thick. The four holes to attach it did not line up with the threaded holes in the tank. And the plastic used needs some UV protection. Mine turned very dark in only one year, and most of that time it was inside the building.

Glen Pettits dash installed in 2012.

Lowells dash after one year

I know Lowell was experimenting with different materials. I hope that mine was just a one-off.

I did modify it to accommodate the switch, elongated the mounting holes, and before bringing it to the big show this year, I bead-blasted it and sprayed with an anti-UV clear coat.

Thank you for all the input. I have tried buying from wheel horse parts and more and the orders take a long time to get or I don’t here a call or message back from them

Catching up on old posts I missed by being “summer busy"

Bob, I’d have no qualms whatsoever pulling that dash off and painting it with a couple light dusting coats of a good plastic-specific paint like Krylon or Rustoleum for Plastic.

Funny thing is, after clear-coating it with a UV resistant spray, it re-yellowed. Must not be a UV related problem

@brandon701 I just made one out of diamond plate aluminum, works great I just have a choke cable, om, off switch and a pushbutton and the tac I have a RJ like throttle on the side it came with because the dash broke, you can see it in that picture

UV resist may not be 100% plus the material might be highly sensitive to UV. Or it just ages due to atmospheric chemistry and outgassing of the plastic!

I made one out of aluminum road sign. Actually I had ordered one from Glenn P. and never recieved it. I dont know if he was having health problems or something else was going on but just forgot about it after I couldn't get a hold of him. wheelhorsepartsandmore makes one out of aluminum that looks like the original plastic one (cost a little more $100) but thats probally what I would have went with if I had known about them before making this one..

That's what I think is happening. Some of the chemical make up of the plastic is evaporating right out of the piece. I had gotten some of those plastic hub covers with the horse head on them for a dump cart. They sat outside and they turned from red to almost white.

Because this was a total restore to original condition, aluminum is out of the question. Next option is to sandblast it again and coat it with an off-white UV-proof vinyl dye.

Yeah I understand that was my goal also for mine but never got my dash so improvised lol. The aluminum one wheelhorsepartsandmore sells looks just like the original ones but wouldnt have to worry about warpage and uv light but I understand where your coming from. I have used plastic specific paint/die before with good results might be an option for you..
