My 89 312-8 carb

Recommended Posts

So my 89 312-8 has been running a little rough. Sometimes I have to run for a while with the choke on just to keep it running. I took the carb off and there was a lot of junk in the bowl. I am going to replace the fuel lines because they are getting very soft and I think coming apart from the inside. I also wanted to rebuild the carb but wasn’t sure what kit to get. I was just going to get one off Amazon but I’m not sure which. The carb is a walbro stamped 4705386. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If you have a local Toro dealer with a good parts guy, take the tractor model number, serial number , and carb number on a visit to that dealer and ask about a carb rebuild kit.  He should be able to cross that information with the Kohler parts list.

This won't be the least expensive option, but you should end up with the proper kit.

That number helps a lot.  If you feel like diving deeply into Kohler and Walbro carbs, check out this manual:

Engine Kohler Carburetor reference #TP-2377-E.pdf - Kohler - RedSquare Wheel Horse Forum

Your carb is a 1" fully adjustable Walbro, you'll see a parts breakdown on pages 3.8 and 3.9, and it looks like the repair kit is 25 757 08.  Genuine Kohler is pricey, $54 from OPE Engines, but that's what I would get if I needed a complete kit.

But it's also possible you don't need a full kit.  I would certainly go ahead and replace ALL the fuel lines, and install a fuel filter if you don't have one.  And the fact that you have to use the choke to keep it running indicates that it may just be running lean, you may just have to adjust the two needles to get it running well again.  I would probably start by removing the needles and cleaning them thoroughly with some carb cleaner or brake cleaner, including the tiny holes in the main needle if there are any, and then re-install them and adjust them to the initial settings specified in the manual, and adjust from there if necessary.

While you're at it, check the throttle shaft for any play, just get a hold of it and wiggle it gently back and forth in its bore.  If there's any movement there, you can add a couple of bushings to eliminate it, it adds some complexity to the process, but it's well worth it.

AND, check out this recent thread for some different points of view:

@tunahead72  bought a WALBRO carb years ago from  I SAVE TRACTORS ,  thing has been bombproof , even down to idle and adjustment settings . my personal experience with W/H  fuel set ups , has been to replace all fuel lines , change out tank lower valve , 2 filters , 1 large close to tank  another small size close to carb . carb detailing  function , at every stage , is important . have added very small extension springs , to assist upper throttle plate closure at start up , also  went after my related choke and throttle  cable function , ensuring smooth easy function . personally since using  STA BIL IN ALL MY FUEL  , have had zero  hose debris in my filters .  add 1 ounce to all my tank top offs after use , hope you find it , pete
