Leaky Fill Tube

Recommended Posts

The fill tube on my 520H is leaking where it goes into the trans. Does the tube screw into the trans or is it pushed in? What is the best way to stop leak?

Looks like it is threaded and most likely made of plastic so be careful.

That type of item usually has a National pipe thread and requires a thread sealer.

Found picture but no longer available from Toro.

Hi Dave. Make sure there are no cracks in the thread. Find a pipe dope that is compatible with use on plastic. IMO I would stay away from teflon tape. It would not be beneficial to the Eaton Hydro if some of it ended inside it. Did you possibly over fill the trans a bit ?

As @JCM said, be sure the plastic pipe isn't cracked.  I have used Rectorseal with good results on everything from steam lines to oil drain plugs for over fifty years. You can find it at ACE, Home Depot, Lowe's or and plumbing supply house.

@953 nut  agree with you and others on the specific  sealer , if anything  can find a sealing fault its hydro fluid . personally , would be looking at a shorter , stronger fill point , to ensure , no issues . would think that in use , with related engine vibration / etc , could easily start a leakage point . you could also make up a  wire cable wrap , for a dip stick , something that would eliminate that elevated buzzing stage . just a thought , repetitive  failure  is your track of  elimination , pete

When did you first notice the oil ?  Those Eatons can burp the oil up and out the tube as well making it look like a leak. Mine have done that as well.

:text-yeahthat: Exactly what I was gonna say. If you push it around, say in the garage- they burp. Especially true if it sits for a week or two between using it.

I just bought it. It's in pretty nice shape with 561 hours. It sat for a while so I am taking my time going through it from stem to stern.

I have a grey bottle of rectorseal 5 with a brush.  Is that the correct pipe dope?

Rectorseal # 5 is NOT good for ABS plastic IF that is what the fill tube is made of. That I don't know. You need to read the label. The gray Type is good for PVC. Is the dope yellow you have ?

I may be down that way this month at some point. I want to return your chair you left at the M & G last year unless you are coming up this September Dave.

Jim, I'm planning on coming up in September. I'm not worried about the chair but swing by if you like. Dave
