sqrlgtr 552 #1 Posted July 1 Just wanted to give a big thanks to Docwheelhorse for the cart, cafoose for hauling and handling transaction and Pullstart for letting cafoose know I was needing help with transportation. Finally home but worth the wait plus me and cafoose even done a little “horse trading” when he finally came home lol.. 6 7

Handy Don 12,217 #4 Posted July 1 An engine, a seat, and a couple of other parts came home with me. Waiting to hear from @Bill D on getting together to hand it over! @Tractorhead and I started an overhaul of the 854 S/G and I’m finishing that up today with the install of the adjustable regulator I picked up at the show. Will be a slight delay as I just discovered I’m out of 12ga stranded wire for the regulator-to-ammeter connection--sigh. 1

I’d notice some accumulated crud in the glass fuel bowl so I remove it to clean it and fumble fingers me dropped & broke it. I’m quite vexed with myself.

I have one that needs coils and my rebuilder can't get them any more.

I have a bowl or two around here I'll never use. I could ship em if it'd help.

The motor/generator parts came off the Bay from a fellow in Ohio. About $25 for new bearings, brushes, springs, and connection posts including shipping. Turns out one bearing was fine so I left it in. Same for the posts (and I avoided breaking out the soldering iron 👍). Brushes were shot, as expected. New coils or armatures are NLA so we’re down to scrounging from old units. A-to-Z is where I’d start and aim for a good shell with the mounted coils and brush holders. The CL guy in Malvern is another source but he only does complete S/Gs, not parts. I saw only a very few S/Gs at the show and I only found the one regulator by itself. I’ve been using an aftermarket regulator which required bending a spring holder to make adjustments and wasn’t having joy. I spotted an old Delco-Remy regulator that has the voltage/current adjustments with screws at the show and grabbed it. I tested all the innards and they are to spec so I’m confident I’ll be able to dial it in. I don’t know any way to get the internals for a regulator as parts -- these are riveted together and even in the D-R service manuals I have from the 50’s, they are clear that shorts or broken wiring in the coils or broken springs are most likely fatal for that unit. I’ve ordered a complete Gravely unit (since in a week I’ll need my mower running!) but bring what you don’t need to the JCM meet & greet and I’ll gladly pay you on Tuesday (And with that insurance policy in place, I’ll never break another bowl) 😁 1

Let‘s see what works first. 😎
