But the corn used to make fuel alcohol is not food grade. I'm told it's actually nearly inedible. But its also a very low-grade alcohol. Using alcohol from sugar cane would get us a lot closer to the stated emissions goals, but the US doesn't have enough area with the right climate to grow that much sugar cane. I have however done the math, and if you have a vehicle 2002 or newer, and you are in an area that has the 88 Octane E15, and your 87 is E10, and the E15 is more than 2 cents less per gallon, which it usually is, it is more cost effective to run the 88 than the 87. squonk 41,104 #27 Posted July 2 The more alcohol, the less BTU content, meaning less power per cylinder cycle and less MPG.
lynnmor 7,305 #28 Posted July 2 Since ethanol will require more gallons to be used, and taxes are paid per gallon, there is quite an incentive for pushing the fuel that brings in the most taxes. Pure gasoline has an energy density of 115,600 BTU per gallon, while ethanol has an energy density of 75,670 BTU per gallon.
Handy Don 12,217 #29 Posted July 2 (edited) Yep. Subsidies to farmers and taxes to pay for it. Sounds like a jobs program. We had one in NY for a long time. Lock up lots of very minor criminals and have to build a lot of jails and employ lots of staff. Closed 24 prisons since 2011 after many accused of minor, first-time, non-violent crimes became eligible for more affordable bail and, if convicted, for in-community service instead of incarceration. So far crime continues to decline. Edited July 2 by Handy Don
clueless 2,991 #30 Posted July 2 Up in till 4 years ago I have been storing 50 gallon of gas every summer for the last 35+ years during hurricane season for my generator. While that may sound a bit extreme down here you can be out of power for weeks, my longest was 22 days. When one of these cat 3s hits down here the gas stations can be down for days and when they start operating again you are most likely restricted to 10 gallons and have to sit in line for a couple of hours. Over the years I've tried all the (as Mr. Maynard calls them snake oils) out there some help a little some don't do anything. About 12 years ago I started using a product call PRI-G, one ounce stabilizes 16 gallon for two years at least that's what they claim. When I started using it it seam to work better the any of the other said snake oils. One year I keep a 2.5 gallon can of ethanol untreated and one treated, poured some of both in two different jar after a year and the treated looked better then the untreated, the untreated had some water separation. After two years there was a big difference the untreated looked pretty funky and the water separation was amazing. For the past four years I have stored 65 gallons of propane, it's a no brainer. So after all of this my point is I still use the PRI-G for my outdoor equipment and my boats and while it may be just snake oil it is very cheap snake oil. A 16oz. bottle is around $30 on Amazon and it treats 256 gallons of gas, you can do the math. 2
Wild Bill 633 845 #31 Posted July 2 Well Gentlemen, we have a conclusion, the purpose of alcohol is meant to be drank and not burned. 2
