A little more information on the switch you are using and type of starter would be helpful.

The only wire on a 701 that runs to the front of the engine is the wire to the coil. You can run it with your fuel line under the flywheel cover where it will be out of danger.

No solenoid?

One note - you will not be able to use the original 701 starter solenoid. The factory solenoid uses a negative signal to power the magnetic switch. You will need to replace it with a newer solenoid that uses positive power to power up the magnetic switch.

There are two ways to handle this successfully.  If you are sure you don’t know what you’re doing, I’d suggest keeping to the original wiring diagram and not changing switch styles.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

I re wired most of my 701 last year when I got it I was 13, someone put a cub cadet solinoid on it and I just color coated the digraham and went off that, it works, but, I just kept the original push button and got a on/off switch from Menards, because the plastic dash on mine was ruined, I put a diamond plate dash on mine, and I just have a 2 prong on.off switch and the original push button, o dont have any pictures of it now, I don't know if this will help any erither, but good luck.

Ok I kind of wanted to just keep a key switch since it was wired you like that back in the day but got torn apart

If you are using just a high amperage switch, it will have to be wired with 6 gauge wire. You won't have to worry about that melting.

The key switch that came on your 701 just turns the power to the ignition coil on and off. That will work fine as is.

Are you going to use a newer engine that has a starter rather than a starter/generator or are you just using a modern type solenoid?

What I meant my melting is like there has to be a wire connection to the ignition coil and I was wondering where to run it so it don't melt.

You can run it anywhere that it doesn't directly touch the exhaust pipe or muffler. Most 14 or 16 gauge automotive wires are good to about 300 f. degrees.

I think what I will do is just go buy a button and the switch to make it easier and I won't have to guess where stuff goes

Ok that's what I thought but didn't know

I would run the fuel hose and the ignition coil wire below the fan shroud on your engine keeping them both out of harms way.

Just my two-cents worth. The 701 wiring is pretty simple as it is. I am not sure that I understand why you want to alter it. Mine has been working perfectly for 63 years.

I ran the wire on the side  of the engine but I think I am going to go under the fan shroud just so it don't melt
