Hello everyone!

Thought I would post a new thread on this as I wasn't able to find the information I was looking for. But I'm trying to get this drive belt on my 252-H and no matter what I try I can't get it on. I got a 1/2" x 76" so I know its the correct size belt. I followed the steps outlined in the manual which I've attached, and is shown on page 15. So I loosened the cross bar nuts and the flat idler adjustment pulley. And followed the routing from this guide: http://outdoorpowerinfo.com/repairs/wheel_horse_hydro_252-h_drive_belt.asp

I just can't get enough slack on it to get it over the engine pulley! Right now it's pinched up between the body and the pulley so possibly I can't get enough leverage, do I need to somehow work it from below the pulley? Doesn't help the pulley keeps coming off the shaft so I have it propped up using a scissor jack which is cumbersome to work around. I don't have a shop or anyway I can think of to safely stand the mower up and not sure about tipping it on it's side. Anyone who has done this particular belt on this mower before have any tips or suggestions for how to get this thing on?

Thanks for the help friends!

CJ

The flat idler closest to the engine is mounted in a slotted hole. That would give you a bit of slack. Try putting the belt on this pulley last. It would require less slack than the engine pulley.

On the later hydro horizontal-shaft WHs, the drive belt can be very challenging to fit--especially a new one that hasn’t been “broken in” to flex easily.

The solution for me was to remove the tensioner pulley, thread the belt, and then, with the belt in the pulley groove, re-attach it.

Is something like that an option for you?

Oh! Thats a good idea! Is that pulley hard to get back in its slot to tighten back up once its off? I considered this but wasn't sure of I was then gonna have some issues with getting that pulley back on. But I'll give that a shot too! Thanks so much Handy!

Hey Gwest! Nice tip! Ok I'll give this a shot first and see if I can get it and if not I think between this and Handy's suggestion I may be able to get it. Thanks again guys you all are the best!

Still couldn't get it. I just can't get enough slack. Calling in one of my mechanic buddies whose a little more adept than I at these things to see if he can finagle it. If anyone else has any tips would love to hear any and all of them. May help him out as well.

Hey @Handy Don, by removing the tensioner pulley, are you referring to part number 10 in the parts link that Gwest posted? Or do you mean one of the pulleys in the rear near the transmission?

Thanks!

removing the tensioner pulley,

I was referring to the setup in the horizontal engine WHs with hydro transmissions and wondering if there was a similar mechanism in your vertical engine machine. I don’t have any first hand knowledge of the 200 series drive system. Sorry.

Hi Guys my C81 has a 38 dual blade, side discharge mower deck (# 0537SC01) The deck belt also goes around the mandrels through the mule drive and also to the PTO so it's a huge belt. The current belt is stretched and ready to go. I believe it is around 1/2 X 142 inches but not sure was hoping one of you might have the correct size. Much appreciated. Rob

Hi All,  I have a 71 or 72 Model # 101006, Serial # 790336.  Model number chart says 71 but the paper for the engine has a print code 72.  The closest I could find was for models 1-3745 & 1-3741.
Two questions.  I finally need to replace the drive belt.  This manual list the belt as # 1576.
      Two questions:
      1)  Does anyone know what size that translates to?  I do have the old belt but the inside edge is falling apart so it will measure a little longer than it should.
      2) This tractor has the electric clutch.  What is the best way to remove the belt?

      As always...Thanks!

      Hey all!
New to the page so first, thank you for the add! I’ve been a Wheel Horse fan for over 20 years since my old neighbor and his grandfather got me hooked! After many years of searching, I finally got a hold of a real one! I did have a Toro-Wheel Horse….212-? It was a good machine but gave it to a friend for a back up. I picked up a 1988 , 252-H and it’s clean! A little rust but the red shines up nice! Everything is original. Belts, tires, bulbs….fuel line and filter have been replaced. I started cutting my lawn the day I brought it home and since my yard is a little hilly, thought maybe the sensor under the seat was the culprit for the stall but it seems to depend how warm it is out? I managed to cut the entire back yard today and just as I was pulling it into the shed, it sputtered and died. It fires right up and runs great when cold! Even seems fine after a while running but after reading a few posts, I might try to replace the spark plug. The one thing I did not check. This was an issue with a 20+ year old Echo weed wacker I had so I will try that. If anyone has any other ideas/info, I would appreciate it! Thank you and have a great evening!

Does anyone know what battery a 1988 252-H needs. I looked around and couldn’t really find an answer. Thanks

I’m trying to restore my grandfathers old 252-H to use around my property. The tires are shot and the rims aren’t too far behind. Anyone have any recommendations for rims and tires that would fit well on it?

      right now it has 22 x 7.50 - 12 on the back and 15 x 6 - 6 on the front.
