davem1111 2,036 #11 Posted July 7 HEY! Sorry I wasn't around to thank you all for the birthday wishes. I have been way too busy to get on here for a while. Our renovation work is going well, making lots of progress. We also just got back from a trip to GA and NC, visiting family and close friends. AND..... I have some great news! As of Friday, I have officially become a Grandpa! My daughter, her hubby, and the new baby girl are over in Wales, so it's gonna be a while before we get to see them. Hoping to go over in October or November. Woohoo!

They live (almost?) walking distance from Hay Castle in Hay-on-Wye, which is about a thousand years old. 1

None here, been relying on several window units to beat the heat. But I just bought a 27K BTU 2-zone mini-split which I will be installing very soon.
peter lena 8,702 #18 Posted July 8 @ dave1111, back in the day , can remember only having a/c in one room of the house , the rest was terrible , been over 30 years now with central A/C , also every room has a ceiling fan , takes the work out of moving air . regularly service it my self , have it in the cellar , so its always easy to service . best money spent , pete

The thing that surprised me when I first drove from London to North Wales was the lack of forested areas. When I questioned this,, I was told the forests were clear cut in the 1700s to provide timber for the Royal Navy Shipbuilding.

And subsequent efforts to promote re-forestation have been soundly defeated by a variety of interests that want to slowly but surely use that “open” space for their own ends.
