gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,078 #2 Posted June 20 Running out of fuel - loosen the cap in case the tank vent is plugged.. There is likely a filter in the tank. If you can drain the complete tank by gravity with a consistent flow the filter should be good. Start out with at least 1/2 tank. May be junk in the fuel from 39 years of service. Losing ignition or spark? Download this file and there is one drawing there that shows just the ignition. Not what we normally see in ignition circuits. When the pto is ON the seat switch powers the ignition. When the pto is OFF the pto switch powers the ignition.

So far, I have changed the ignition coil, condenser. wire from the spark plug to the ignition coil with no improvement. In this forum is there a way that I can be notified when someone reply to a question

rmaynard 15,554 #6 Posted June 24 Common problem. Do the simplest thing first. Run it again. When it stops, unscrew the gas cap. Try starting. If it starts, a clogged vent in the cap is your problem.

8ntruck 7,043 #12 Posted July 15 In line gas filters are usually not full. The filter on my 14-8 is usually half full, or half empty if you are a pessimist.
peter lena 8,680 #13 Posted July 15 @Marcel very easy to DROP THE CARB BOWL , possible loaded with tank / fuel line debris , tank is probably loaded with related goodies over the years . have also run the engine , on a seperate gallon of heavily treated fresh gas , for a refresh / cleanout . gas lines do not have to be full , but have to staidly replace any air gap that shows up . sounds like fuel hose break down to me , not a difficult fix , pete

Brand new filter and gas line. The carburettor and tank are higher than the filter, shouldn’t the filter be full
rjg854 11,396 #15 Posted July 15 Not necessarily, most of mine aren't totally full.

Willy29 7 #17 Posted July 19 I have a similar issue with my H520, it starts cold no problem, then after 5 min. it shuts off and acts like it's not getting fuel. The inline filter isn't clogged and the fresh fuel is 91 octane with good fuel stabilizer. It sometimes starts in 5 min. then keeps running for over an hour. Never had this issue since I bought it in 1998.

If no spark is found then the ignition module is likely failing when hot.
Willy29 7 #19 Posted July 24 Thanks, but why will it run after I get it started again and not shut off?

peter lena 8,680 #21 Posted July 24 @Marcel nothing sarcastic , but a repetitive problem , is what you want for tracking , think fuel is involved , but common , wire chafing , shorting , corrosion connections , with chassy movement , can also act up , would not be surprised if its , tank crud related , might also try running it on a seperate gallon of heavily treated fresh gas , pete
Willy29 7 #22 Posted July 25 I used my Toro leaf blower, got rid of a mouse nest and it ran great today. Thanks for all the suggestions. I also didn't know there was a fuel filter in the tank. Thanks for that info.
