jsp_333 268 #1 Posted June 19 Recently picked up a Suburban. One of the first things I did was change/ flush the transmission fluid. Drained it and it came out chocolate brown like there was water in it. Ran some gear oil through it - I keep for running through new to me projects. Filled it back up with new oil and it's making the most god awful screech when I pushed it back in the garage. Any one else ever experience this? If it has been sitting for quite a while, I'll speculate Water in the oil rusted some things Flushing it and running it broke rusted things up (possible needle bearing needles. Now these "loose items are moving around getting caught in places that should move. If you push it around by hand do you 'feel" any tight spots? It it was me, i would flush it with something thin like diesel or kerosene. Probable twice. (if nothing else, this will be a prewash before teardown) With the diesel/kerosene in it, rotate the input pulley by hand and have the tractor jacked up so you can also rotate the rear wheels by hand. after draining, pass a magnet through the drained fluid and see what you find. jsp_333 268 #4 Posted June 20 (edited) The tractor has no engine so the only thing I’ve ever done is push it around. So I keep a jug of unused gear oil to run through any new to me transmission after it’s been drained. Then refill with new unused oil. I’ll do a proper flush/ clean with kerosene When the tractor is jacked up the tires spin freely without making any sound. Didn't feel any tight spots when pushing it back into the garage. Running a magnet through drained kerosene is a great idea. Thanks. I’ll have a look later whether it’s a 2 piece or 3 piece transmission. oliver2-44 9,751 #5 Posted June 20 So just to fully understand the tractor did not screech when you pushed it around before the transmission flush If this is the 3 pc transmission I had one that had a broken diff bolt and others loose. it would roll 3/4 rear wheel turn and lock up. Diff and rear axle bushings were very worn. After I rebuilt it, the diff would just lightly rub on the inside rear casting. made no since. After many dis and reassembles I finally lightly ground the inside casting where the diff was rubbing. So I'm back to wondering if you cleaned crud out of worn bushing and now the diff is rubbing the rear of the casing. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
jsp_333 268 #6 Posted June 21 So apparently I'm a bit of a putz. I work on the tractor in the evenings. Pushed it around the front yard today around noon in full sunlight and noticed something vibrating. It was the rod that tightens the break band mechanism. That is where the noise is coming from. I've loosened off the nut that holds it in place but I'm going to have to inspect it further.
