In the meantime, take out those 2 bolts from the seat and shine a light down one hole and see what it looks like inside the trans. Have never found one that the owner would let go of. P.O. gave me a lot of verbal information. Grandpa bought it new and it lived inside in NC since. All tires and rims are good and I intend to keep. The unknown motor will run. Grandpa replaced in the eighties. parked and gas drained. weak spark and killer compression. Carb, tank, and line I am confident it will run. Achto 27,565 #7 Posted June 19 (edited) I am leaning towards a 1961 Suburban 501. The 401 would have had a 3 piece transmission. The 501 came with a 2 piece transmission and a 5hp Tecumseh. Yes it’s a Tecumseh probably between 6.5-9 horsepower. It’s one of the newer models with the throttle built right into the engine shroud so it’s probably a replacement engine PO did. I think the original "hoodstand has been removed or modified on your tractor to make room for the newer engine. It would be at near the front of this homemade belt guard. Please post a side view from the left side of this area under the hoodd. Treepep 562 #24 Posted June 26 Question...Can anyone tell me how to re align the shifter? I really think this trans is okay. Does it need to be split to get the shift business back together? I have two transmissions. In my opinion they seem to be great. One I bought in a lot. I drained, flushed and filled with synthetic gear oil. The other one is this 551. Same I flushed and after swapping motors I drove around,drained. Repeat etc. all gears great (seemingly) backing up the driveway the shifter came out in my hand. rjg854 11,360 #25 Posted June 26 It's a feel type of thing. You have to line the dog point screw up with the dimple in the ball of the shifter rod. Don't over tighten it once you get it together. It needs to be loose enough to shift thru the gears but not so loose that it can come out of that dimple. Then tighten the nut that keeps the dog point screw in place. Be careful how much pressure you put on the dog point screw with the nut. I've snapped one off by over tightening it. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
