Looks like it was a 401...nice horse.  :eusa-think:  The deck looks to be a 1961 also.  The 1960 deck would have the back wheels inside the deck.  Great pictures.  :orcs-cheers:

So... I need a 4 horse Kohler pull start?  I still have that other 3spd I want to go through.  Maybe between the two I will have one nice one.  Almost no oil in this rear end.  Goes through the gears so hopeful.  Rough n ready

Well, let's see if we all think it is a 401 first.  Then, the question is, "Are you trying to make this original"?

In the meantime, take out those 2 bolts from the seat and shine a light down one hole and see what it looks like inside the trans.

Also, I think the back rest on the seat is not 1961...and those very cool front rims.  All in all...very nice find !!  :occasion-xmas:

Fun... just something to wrench on.  always wanted a round hood.  Have never found one that the owner would let go of.

P.O. gave me a lot of verbal information.  Grandpa bought it new and it lived inside in NC since.  All tires and rims are good and I intend to keep.  The unknown motor will run.  Grandpa replaced in the eighties.  parked and gas drained.  weak spark and killer compression.  Carb, tank, and line I am confident it will run.  Not certain of my intention at this point other than to get it to move under its own power.

Thank you!

Couldn't see the engine, if it's a Tecumseh; they all have weak fire, that's normal.

I am leaning towards a 1961 Suburban 501. The 401 would have had a 3 piece transmission. The 501 came with a 2 piece transmission and a 5hp Tecumseh. Hard to see the framing to tell if it has the mounting for the battery.

Nice tractor!!

CORRECT! Yes it’s a Tecumseh probably between 6.5-9 horsepower. It’s one of the newer models with the throttle built right into the engine shroud so it’s probably a replacement engine PO did.

Cast brake pedal and cast slot hitch was late 1960, believed all 1961

Cast foot rest are 1961

The hood with the round hole and push pull choke and throttle were 1961 only.

2 piece transmission was 551 only

From the WH Model List.

551 1961 Lawn & Garden Tractor 551 4-Speed Tecumseh H55D-2113 5.5 Wheel Horse 5007

WHX??

One looks at the belt guard and you have to appreciate the picture in one's mind of a grey haired grampa sitting at his work bench making it.

Nice tractor!!

Where would battery box be?  There is a seemingly factory strap under the hood for a gas tank maybe?  Another strap was screwed in from above at a later date.

Yes, 551 !!  For some strange reason, I thought I saw a 3 piece transmission.  I'm just not as sharp as I once was.  :bow-blue:  Battery box would have been mounted on the frame in front of the engine.

The battery was located directly in front of the engine.

I think the original "hoodstand has been removed or modified on your tractor to make room for the newer engine.

It would be at near the front of this homemade belt guard.  Please post a side view from the left side of this area under the hoodd.

I have a 551 in parts and will get a picture of the frame and hoodstand .

plus mowing deck points to 1961 also. I think the 1960's had no wheels....

@sqrlgtr the 1960 mower deck had wheels, they were in the inside of the deck. One year only because grass kept jamming the wheels.  :eusa-think:

The above statement is not correct.  Edited  :bow-blue:

Pretty sure the 701 was only model that had the inside wheels. I had one and it got hauled off with scrap metal dang it. here is a 1960 550 mowing deck that I have without the wheels.

It is a newer 5.5 techy.  It will run.  Runs now with the same motor from the shed.  Sadly transmission needs to be gone through.  Someday.... Maybe

Question...Can anyone tell me how to re align the shifter?  I really think this trans is okay.  Does it need to be split to get the shift business back together?

I have two transmissions.  In my opinion they seem to be great.  One I bought in a lot.  I drained, flushed and filled with synthetic gear oil. The other one is this 551.  Same I flushed and after swapping motors I drove around, drained.  Repeat etc. all gears great (seemingly) backing up the driveway the shifter came out in my hand.   I cannot seem to get it lined back up.  Thoughts?

Many thanks guys

It's a feel type of thing.   You have to line the dog point screw up with the dimple in the ball of the shifter rod.  Don't over tighten it once you get it together.  It needs to be loose enough to shift thru the gears but not so loose that it can come out of that dimple.  Then tighten the nut that keeps the dog point screw in place. Be careful how much pressure you put on the dog point screw with the nut.  I've snapped one off by over tightening it.
