ebinmaine 67,415 #1 Posted June 19 There's a house about a quarter mile up that has several long haired, longhorned, Highland cattle, some sheep, a few chickens. Monday afternoon Trina and I were walking by the house about a quarter mile PAST theirs. Standing in the end of the driveway... Side by side... was two of their adult cows. A thousand pounds a piece or more. Probably 4 ft horn span. LOOSE. Just standing there watching us. They might have been 15 ft away. We went and got the girl that owns them and helped wrangle them towards the correct house some. Didn't occur to me until the next day I probably should have been a little nervous about that. 5 1

I have a great respect for what something like a big Belgian horse or an ox or steer could do. I learned a long time ago not to fear them but RESPECT them. 2

ebinmaine 67,415 #7 Posted June 19 @Pullstart That's pretty cool. Rabbits are rare as hen's teeth around here. We see one maybe once a year.

Beap52 809 #9 Posted June 20 According to the U.S. Department of Labor Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries and the Surveillance of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses databases, bulls caused 48% of cattle-related fatalities. Bulls account for only 2% of cattle nationwide. They are large, filled with adrenaline and testosterone, and can inflict injury in seconds either intentionally or by accident. I had heard years ago that bulls injured more farmers than any other farm animal and the paragraph above seems to support that. Cows, provided they don't have calves, as a rule seem to be pretty docile. But I'm still wary of unknown animals. I was riding along with my brother in law while he was feeding his cattle hay. We dropped a large bale and the bull came up and rolled and butted that hay bale. Larry said when that bull finishes his job, the bull was leaving his farm. He warned me to keep an eye on the bull when I opened the gate as we were leaving the pasture. As a kid, I didn't like helping grandpa castrate pigs. Those momma sows got pretty aggressive.
