Maz91 202 #1 Posted June 17 This is probably going to take me forever because of the zillion other projects I have going but I figured why not get started. My goal is to return this Raider to new condition so that it can survive another 50 years. It’s gonna be put to work. spent a little time and made some decent progress. It looks like a normal red plastic tank from here. Except for the corner that is soaked in grease. Try brake cleaner. rmaynard 15,425 #6 Posted June 17 If you ever see a billboard or advertising sign that is printed with red, after time red is the first color to fade. Recently, UV additives have been added to prevent fading. That tractor probably sat where the bottom corner of the tank was subjected to UV rays. I would clean it up, lightly abrade it with 600 grit Scotch Brite, then coat it with red VHT vinyl dye. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

As we have found when they crack at the seam, the only way to mend it is by plastic welding (melting). So pretty much any cleaner will not hurt it. But here is a bit of trivia that I learned from a guy that sells car wash soap in the blue poly barrels. When he stencils the barrels with the contents, he has to use acrylic latex paint. Maz91 202 #10 Posted June 24 Hope everyone had a good time at the wheel horse show! snuck in a little more time with my tractor. Really not hard to figure out how to dismantle these things.. although I’m starting to get to the point where some of it is a little tricky. Looks like I’m near the point of dropping out the transmission, taking off the engine and then taking the rest of the “center console” apart. hopefully with this big pile of parts I can just grind and paint a few things whenever I run into some spare time. Maz91 202 #15 Posted September 16 Well I’ve been chipping away when I can. I spend days and days sanding and grinding and finally started getting some parts in primer. I definitely went further with the rust and old paint removal than most people would, I bet. These pics are just some of what I have done about half way through spraying them, but it’s proof I’m doing something!! I need to get the frame and “center console” section cleaned up next and then I can spray some color and maybe start putting things back together. Racing the clock trying to be ready to plow this winter. what would be the correct chemical to use to clean dirty finger prints off of these parts that are now in (rustoleum) primer that won’t remove the primer? Maz91 202 #17 Posted September 22 Couldn’t really sleep last night, so I went out to the garage late and finally took the engine and the brake/clutch pedal off my tractor and got it down to the frame. Very exciting because once this frame is refinished I’m really hoping this project starts moving fairly rapidly. one thing I noticed for sure is that regal red is not looking like the factory color. I had kind of said f it and ordered a case of regal, but as an indecisive person this messes me all up. Now I have to really think whether to stick with the darker color (regal) or to try to match the factory paint. I guess I should also consider that the regal red will fade and become lighter over time. as a side note, I listened to this interview with Norman from Isavetractors who I owe just as much to this hobby as Red Square. Pretty interesting story on that guy. Who knew he was a traveling professional magician? That’s crazy. also seriously considering changing my user name to Mike Wazowski. The Regal red is the choice of many collectors. My color of choice is International Harvester red. Is it a perfect match?? Not perfect, but after the whole tractor is painted it looks excellent. I was just telling he and Trina the other day that the military tribute tractor is definitely one of the coolest I have seen. for me, this is my only wheel horse and I’m the type of person that likes to keep stuff period correct/original. I might just hit send on the regal red because I’ve been telling myself I like darker red vs brighter all along.
