1971 Raider 12 Restoration

Recommended Posts

Maz91

This is probably going to take me forever because of the zillion other projects I have going but I figured why not get started. My goal is to return this Raider to new condition so that it can survive another 50 years. It’s gonna be put to work.

spent a little time and made some decent progress. Anyone ever seen a gas tank fade/look like the color wore off? Weird!! Any ideas how to make it red again?

until next time!

Following along! I have a 72 Raider 12 that's in line for a restoration so it'll probably be about 20 years until I get to it lol

I found that fuel tank discoloration very odd. Any of you guys ever seen this? Or thoughts on what's going on here?

It looks like a normal red plastic tank from here.     Except for the corner that is soaked in grease.    Try brake cleaner.     If it doesn't clean up, paint it .

If you ever see a billboard or advertising sign that is printed with red, after time red is the first color to fade. Recently, UV additives have been added to prevent fading. That tractor probably sat where the bottom corner of the tank was subjected to UV rays.

I would clean it up, lightly abrade it with 600 grit Scotch Brite, then coat it with red VHT vinyl dye.

Great info thank you! I was thinking if the dye route, but I couldn’t remember who makes it!!

Most of it has been wiped away and that’s what’s left. Gonna clean up good and paint/dye and hopefully it comes out nice!

Ed or Bob do you have any recommendations for how to clean that without damaging the plastic?

You can't damage it. It is polyethylene. As we have found when they crack at the seam, the only way to mend it is by plastic welding (melting). So pretty much any cleaner will not hurt it. But here is a bit of trivia that I learned from a guy that sells car wash soap in the blue poly barrels. When he stencils the barrels with the contents, he has to use acrylic latex paint. Nothing else sticks.

Hope everyone had a good time at the wheel horse show!

snuck in a little more time with my tractor. Really not hard to figure out how to dismantle these things.. although I’m starting to get to the point where some of it is a little tricky. Looks like I’m near the point of dropping out the transmission, taking off the engine and then taking the rest of the “center console” apart.

hopefully with this big pile of parts I can just grind and paint a few things whenever I run into some spare time. Which is never!! Haha!

I hope you took a lot of pictures as you took it apart. It would aid when putting it back together. After a lapse of time the memory can get a little foggy where all those parts go. :twocents-twocents:

Yes luckily that was recommended to me and I took that advice. Might have even been you when I made a post in November about getting the tractor back! I’m definitely the foggy type 😵💫

Well I’ve been chipping away when I can. I spend days and days sanding and grinding and finally started getting some parts in primer. I definitely went further with the rust and old paint removal than most people would, I bet.

These pics are just some of what I have done about half way through spraying them, but it’s proof I’m doing something!! I need to get the frame and “center console” section cleaned up next and then I can spray some color and maybe start putting things back together. Racing the clock trying to be ready to plow this winter.

what would be the correct chemical to use to clean dirty finger prints off of these parts that are now in (rustoleum) primer that won’t remove the primer? Seeing things looking cleaned up and looking new is already getting me all fired up for the end result!!

Couldn’t really sleep last night, so I went out to the garage late and finally took the engine and the brake/clutch pedal off my tractor and got it down to the frame. Very exciting because once this frame is refinished I’m really hoping this project starts moving fairly rapidly.

one thing I noticed for sure is that regal red is not looking like the factory color. I had kind of said f it and ordered a case of regal, but as an indecisive person this messes me all up. Now I have to really think whether to stick with the darker color (regal) or to try to match the factory paint. I guess I should also consider that the regal red will fade and become lighter over time.

as a side note, I listened to this interview with Norman from Isavetractors who I owe just as much to this hobby as Red Square. Pretty interesting story on that guy. Who knew he was a traveling professional magician? That’s crazy.

also seriously considering changing my user name to Mike Wazowski. A nickname Eric and Trina gave me that’s kinda sticking haha.

One thing that you will find with us :wh: nuts, the color is kind of like horse shoes - close is good with us.:thumbs2: The Regal red is the choice of many :wh: collectors.

My color of choice is International Harvester red. Is it a perfect match?? Not perfect, but after the whole tractor is painted it looks excellent. No one has ever questioned the color on any of my resto's.

Well...:ychain: now that you mentioned it, @WHX?? said something about cherry red with flames being preferred and, well, @ebinmaine has been known to go outside the norms of :wh: propriety in public... :scared-eek:

One...... One Horse that isn't red.

Outta four I currently have running.

And even that one's reddish brown or brownish red.

In public!!! I was just telling he and Trina the other day that the military tribute tractor is definitely one of the coolest I have seen.

for me, this is my only wheel horse and I’m the type of person that likes to keep stuff period correct/original. I might just hit send on the regal red because I’ve been telling myself I like darker red vs brighter all along. I’m really just surprised to see how bright the original color was.

WHX??

If you like darker red Regal is your ticket.

Thing with Regal is tho is not much for gloss. No big deal for a worker.

As you spray it got it a final coat of Rustoleum Crystal Clear Satin or Gloss. It will dry faster and the Gloss will defiantly increase the shine.

Good to know Re: darker color. I plan to use a clear coat because a lot of people said the paint will dry quicker and be more durable with it.
