KevinO 0 #1 Posted June 16 I was given a poorly running 10-32 rear engine riding mower with NO engine blower shroud. I need to adjust valve clearance but have no way to get engine specs since I have no model or serial number. Can anybody help please?

This is the service manual for these engines Keep the questions coming.

KevinO 0 #4 Posted June 17 Awesome thank you!!!!! The decal on the tractor body is mostly faded but maybe I can put enough numbers together to get the year and then the right service manual. Be nice to get this thing running smooth. Rebuilt the carb which helped but needs more tlc and I suspect valve clearance.
KevinO 0 #5 Posted June 17 It is a 70080. So that leaves me with two engine possibilities. Any other way to tell between a 93 model vrs the 94thru96?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,070 #6 Posted June 17 Have always thought the first 2 digits of the engine model number were the approximate cubic displacement 25 cubic inches and 28 cubic inches. If it is check to see if the bore and stroke are different but that means pulling the head. Here is a link to the parts lists for each tractor. https://www.partstree.com/models/70080-10-32-toro-recycler-rear-engine-riding-mower-parts I checked and both use the same head gasket and piston. The parts lists in the above link have multiple engines listed for likely the 8-32 and was there a 12-32?
Howie 892 #7 Posted June 17 Virtually all of those Briggs engines used the same valve clearance. Be nice to know the exact model number but by looking at any of those will get you the numbers you need. Will have to pull the head and valves and grind the end of valve stems to set clearance. KevinO 0 #8 Posted June 17 I just saw that you mentioned the service manual you included covers all three engines. Sorry I missed that. So I am good to go. Thank you so much, what a great resource you folks are!!! Kevin.

KevinO 0 #10 Posted August 24 So after pulling the head and seeing the state of the cylinder and guides, I purchased a Briggs flathead 12hp, model 289707 and am installing it. Would you please show me the service manual for it?
KevinO 0 #12 Posted August 27 Took the carb apart and cleaned it. It was pretty clean to begin with. Engine idles great, but won't run at hi speed. Using fresh gas. Backfires thru carb. Timing/ ignition problem??
953 nut 55,393 #13 Posted August 27 8 hours ago, KevinO said: Backfires thru carb. Timing/ ignition problem?? Could be a bad or wrong condenser. Be sure the condenser you use is the one intended for your engine. If an engine idles well, but runs erratically when revved up, like it hits and misses, pops and backfires, then chances are, it needs a new condenser/capacitor. And always install a condenser/capacitor with the wire facing downward so rain water and/or when washing off engine, water will not enter inside condenser/capacitor, ruining it. With water inside the condenser, this will also allow it to idle well, but cause it to run erratically when revved up.
KevinO 0 #14 Posted August 27 Had not thought of that. This is an engine without points. Will check into that. Would love an easy fix at this point.
