K241 engine alternatives

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for an alternative to the K241 engine. Looking for a new engine for a 1971 raider 10

How's your access to Kohler K-series engines over there?

You could likely use a 10, 12, or 14 HP from another machine.

there is a site i believe called Repower. lists replacement engines and adapters/parts to fit vintage tractors. pretty pricey though. I would rebuild original if possible or look for a kohler single and rebuild if it were my machine. Lots of "engines" that will fit even diesels have been swapped in just a matter of lining things lined up and getting belts and guards to function properly.

Agreed. Any K-series with the same style oil pan should be direct swappable. Keep your oil pan from the K241, as it will have the two holes drilled and tapped on the PTO side for direct bolt on.

Also, any 10-16 Kohler Magnum will work, but you'll have to change over to magneto ignition. Very simple to do. Same goes for the oil pan.

Thank you. Really helpful. Access to k series not great in uk.

Though I have found a K321 (4 hrs away, and no promises as to how run-worthy it is). Rebuild I am told is not on the cards. All mashed up inside. I am not mechanically minded, so a friend is looking at it for me. I love my wheelhouse though, and don’t want to give up without some efffort.

I realise now I could use a 241, 301 ,321 or 341.. so hopefully if I am patient something will come up. Appreciate your comments.

You are correct. the k241 through K341 are all "Big Block" engines (Their block has the same outside dimensions.).

But be aware there are wide base and narrow bas engines.

This thread will help you understand wide vs narrow base.

You "probable" have a wide was engine. Take your oil ban to match it to the base of the engine.

You also need to natch the crankshaft size and length.

If you have an electric clutch the crank needs to have a hole threaded in the end of it.
