1067, K241 with carter model n carb instant flooding

Recommended Posts

Need adult supervision again. I have had this carb off so many times the bolts are wearing out. I have cleaned the carb 3 times. Put new float needle and seat in, new bowl gaskets, new bowl nut gasket, new carb gasket.  Set idle screw 2.5 turns out, long needle 2 turns out. As soon as I crank it, turn over 6-8 times gas is pouring out of the front of carb., without even having choke on. What am I missing or mistake am I making? Thanks again in advance.

Sounds like a needle & seat issue.

What brand kits are you using?

The needles won’t cause fuel to pour out as you describe.

Clearly there is something amiss with the float, needle valve, and valve seat combo.

I hesitate to ask, but how sure are you that it is correctly assembled? Do you have pictures you can share?

To me, this sounds like one of a few possibilities:

- float is not floating, i.e. is filling with fuel and not activating the float valve, or is getting jammed and is not able to rise enough to push the valve closed

- valve needle is not seating against the valve seat, i.e a) jamming in the sleeve (is the valve needle being held onto the float tab with the little spring?), or b) it isn’t the right needle so it isn't long enough, or c) the tab on the float is not in the correct position to push the valve to close it, or d) the valve isn’t sitting on the tab to be pushed up

- the valve seat itself is ruined and allowing fuel to leak past. Only a very close inspection with good light can reveal this. Some carbs have replaceable valve seats but many do not.

- there remains some debris in the valve that is preventing the valve from properly seating

I don’t know what this means. I can turn carb upside down with weight of bowl on needle and blow as hard as I can no air passes?  Have set float level also. I am at a loss.

I have no idea?  I think I got it off eBay.

This is not really a useful test.

The carb is not in its running position.

There is no fuel in the bowl.

Carbs must work with fuel, not air.

There is one final possibility that I didn’t mention but is an extremely rare occurrence--if the vent from the bowl to the exterior of the carb is clogged, it is possible that if could flood the engine.

If I shake the float in my hand I don’t hear any gas sloshing in there. I will throw it in the pool and see if it floats:)  has new float needle and seat. I’ll take some pics.

A proven test. Sorta.

I've had several brands of carb kits over the years.

I've had some fail.

I now use ONLY Kohler brand carb kits.

Handy don, genius maybe. I’ll let you know in a few. Have to put it back on for the twentieth time. Vent was plugged up solid. Never seen that before so I did not check. Thanks again

Check that vent as Don mentioned! Had one on a carb blocked with "mud dauber" that drove me crazy until i found it. Flooded constantly and made me insane changing, checking, and re-checking.  Difficult to get completely cleaned out.

I had this exact same problem too with my 753 one time and it was the vent as previously mentioned. Had me so ticked until I figured it out I was ready to push the tractor into a hole lol

It’s official in my book, Don is a genius. I feel really stupid. Have had many carbs apart and never seen that. I should have asked here about 2 days ago with what it was doing I was soooooo agitated, would not have said as many bad words. I was about to push it in the woods. It started right up and ran pretty good, good enough that I rode it around the yard for about 10 minutes to slosh the diesel around in transmission. Shifted and moved in all gears hi and lo:greetings-clappingyellow:   Thanks again guys. Not done yet but a lot closer. IT RUNS and MOVES.

I'm gonna have to remember this.  Never had it happen to me, but there's a first time for everything.  Glad you got it running.

If something weird is going to happen it’s going to be me. It’s not always bad, sometimes good weird. An old man told me once that we never have problems, we have opportunities to excel. He also told me it’s what you learn after you know it all that matters. Thanks again for the help guys. Back to work on it today. See if I can find some new opportunities.

If more of us learned that lesson a lot younger, life would be easier.
