bds1984 1,435 #1 Posted June 13 Has anyone here had any experience with a Predator 459 engine? I have the opportunity to acquire one for a song, and possibility of putting one on a WH project, but my hesitation is the 3-amp charging system since I'd be using an electric clutch. Can the charging system capacity be increased?

A lot of Briggs engines only have a 3amp charging system and many tractors that use them also use an electric PTO clutch.
WHX?? 48,854 #3 Posted June 14 Thought I read in a E pto manual they draw 2.5 amps. Seems too small .
Easton Rich 307 #4 Posted June 14 Predators are good engines overall, cheap quality-ish.

I know many B&S engines have a small charging circuit but I'm skeptical that they have an electric clutch if they're built that cheap; why have the added expense of the e-clutch... The last few electric clutches I've replaced drew 4-7 amps of current, but they were on Kohler Commands and Briggs Vanguards with 12-20 amp charging systems. I've stumbled across a few listings for 9-18 amp charging coil systems, and a lot of other performance parts, but this is just exploratory at this point. I'm looking for what experiences people have with the larger Predator engines. My experience with the 212 hemi and non-hemi have been great so far.
bds1984 1,435 #8 Posted September 25 Next month there will be a 26-amp charging system for this engine. Once that arrives in my hands and installed, I'm considering this set-up for my M18 powered 520H. I will finally be able to run an electric clutch on the PTO and use the hydro-lift system for something other than a dozer blade - OR - possibly powering a GT6000 Craftsman for a trail rig.
