Removing axle seals

Recommended Posts

MSBiker

I am struggling to remove a leaking axle seal on my Lawn Ranger. Now that I have it tore up good trying to remove it, I have to replace it now.

Anybody have a good method short of tearing down the transmission? I assume this seal is original to the machine. It is really stuck in there.

Is this the same basic transmission as the larger models?

Lawn Ranger transmission is the usual 3-speed

I use a 1/4 blade flat screwdriver 🪛  about 8" to 10" long. The length makes it easier for ME to work around the axle.

I pretty much do a smash crunch crush around the outside of the seal where it meets the transmission case.

You're removing the seal. Not trying to save it.

It'll rotate some but that doesn't matter.

Eventually the seal will loosen up and keep rotating.

Just slide the seal right off the axle at that point.

Thanks, I've be jambing picks into the seal and trying to hook the edge with no joy. I will sharpen up a flat blade screwdriver and see if I can get it between the body and the housing.

Remember that the seal is only 1/8" thick.  Don't dig too deep.  :orcs-cheers:
