71’ charger 12 electric PTO making noise

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

I recently picked up a 1971 charger 12 Automatic, with electric PTO. I’m just trying to get acquainted to this tractor. It’s been sitting for years. When I engage the PTO it’s quiet , but when I let the engine run and PTO idle it makes a noise similar to a dry bearing or a bad bearing, metal on metal . No horrible but It’s there.

so is this normal? Does it have a bearing?

ant help would be greatly appreciated

@Tooonz probably long over due  for service ,  @ g west reference , my self  personally , have found any PTO MULE  " lubrication " to be ajoke , needs a much higher  temp / stress rating , the wide rubber bearing  side shields are easily removed , cleaned out and regreased . those electric clutches are violent , and also add wear to the rest of the bearing set up. pete

Two bearings.  Your PTO looks to be an older unit.

Do not use any kind of puller to get it off.  You remove the center bolt an you will see some large threads inside the PTO. (Depending on the year maybe 5/8NC  7/8NC or even1"NC.    You get a bolt with the correct thread and screw it in i will push  the PTO out off the crankshaft.  Inner bearing was changed over the years so look for the number on the bearing

Check out this thread

Yours is the older (pre 73) E-PTO clutch.  As pfrederi said, DO NOT use any sort of puller to remove it from the crankshaft.

NOTE---If your bearings are bad, i MAY have good replacements...will have to 'measure up' to confirm.

I have one off of a Bronco. Came off with a 1" bolt. The coil is bad on it but the rest of it is good . You can have it for the price of shipping if you can use it. I have it listed in the Big Show buy sell thread.
