Marvel Mystery Oil

No idea whats in it…it’s a mystery  ? Vise Grip Garage /Derek Bieri reference that some of you may get.
My question is: If you do an oil change and use it (I used just over 1/2 a qt of it) do you leave it in for the full 25 or so hours between oil changes? Or slap a couple hours on it, get it hot a few times, and drain out and go back to straight 30w?

My first thought is:

Why are you using it?

Engine have issues?

It was my 14 Magnum that I thought might have had a sticking valve at one point. Did an oil change (super old black skanky oil) and added the snake oil. Of course it didn’t change anything because my issue was a blockage in the exhaust.

But now that it’s on there, with fresh 30w as well, what’s the next move? Leave it? Drain it?

Been a looooong time since I used any chemicals.

I like the  idea of leaving it in a couple hours and changing.

OK - my two MMO sucess stories....

Chevy Vega - motor # 2 of 3.... Cold February day, collaped lifter, running on 3 ish cylinders. Drained a 1/2 quart, tossed in a bottle of MMO - 5 minutes it idles just fine - AND, it smells like NECCO wafers!!!

Saturn SL1 - seems that the oil rings ARE designed to spin on the pistons!!! They sludge up, stop spinning and oil consumption shoots up.Per the service writer at the now long gone Saturn dealer - Position the car in the garage with tailpipe facing the door,,,,, pull the 4 plugs, add 1oz of MMO in the holes, let sit overnight to "wash" the rings. In the morning, spin the motor over with rags over the plug holes to catch any splash. Install plugs, fire it up until the white smoke goes away....  Performance goes up, oil use goes down.... They used to get $150 a pop for this "service".

Run several hrs and let the pepermint oil clean things up.  On the night before the oil change, dump a whole bunch in the cylinder and let it sit the entire night.  Crank as much out of the spark plug hole onto some shop rags and when you start it up, there will be a smoke screen of epic amounts.

MMO still will work to some degree to clean the piston and rings when used as a piston soak.

Probably only makes sense to New Englanders or transplanted ones. Sadly, gone...

They are still around. I saw some a couple days ago.

My understanding is that MMO is just some light weight oil with some detergent and a couple of other chemicals added (dissolved Necco wafers?) .   I used it successfully, mixed 50:50 with diesel fuel to free up a seized K301 engine.       Haven't used it mixed with oil in my small engines, but I do add it to my car engines, usually about a thousand miles before I have an oil change, hoping to loosen up some sludge.

It's quite likely the cleaners in the MMO got some extra stuff off the inside of the block.

I'd take that as a good sign but I'd also be prone to another quick run & change in the next few hours of run time.

For $10-$12 worth of oil it'd just make me feel better.  :twocents-02cents:

If you want to try the Necco wafers in oil they have them at "Cracker Barrel".

Agree, that black oil indicates there is more crud that should be removed.

@Sparky  been using  RISLONE ZINK  IN ALL MY OILS  for years now , 4 oz , with a 2 + ot oil change, the thing thats most noticeable  is the running ease , zero smoke ,can relate to snake oil , made specifically  for older engines, run it the full 25 hr oil change year round , pete

That Rislone treatment adds some zinc in some form to the oil.  Zinc is usually one of the ingredients in oil used to improve the extreme pressure lubricity - a good thing in our elderly Kohlers, inane, and Techies that have journal bearings and gear driven flat tapped cams.

The modern engine oils are formulated for modern engines with all of the neat friction reducing developments that are not present in our tractors.

My opinion on oil? Any kind of oil is better than not enough oil.  Clean oil is better than dirty oil.

For my old engines with flat tappets, I've been using Shell Rotella.  Why?  Because it is formulated for diesel engines with a better extreme pressure additive package than used in gas engines.  For my new stuff, I follow the manufactures recommendations - they have a whole bunch of people working on lubrication who have forgotten more than I ever knew about the subject.
