Easton Rich 307 #1 Posted June 4 A while ago i noticed my starter was whirling (not engaging) so i just started to hit, but after awhile this kept happening regularly. A few days ago it wasn’t disengaging. I put this off for awhile but today i got to take the motor tins off and remove the starter. I cleaned the starter and greased it with grafite an hooked it up to test it……nothing. What’s wrong? I really want to save it because a new one is $150, all suggestions accepted. 953 nut 55,393 #2 Posted June 5 (edited) Remove and clean the Bendix drive then use some dry graphite lubricant when you put it back on was a good idea. ri702bill 8,387 #3 Posted June 5 IMHO - could be worn brushes, a "bridged" armature (shorted), weak or broken brush spring(s) - or all the above. OE starters are fairly easy and inexpensive to rebuild to be good as new. Impact with a hammer - bad idea. IF you end up cracking one of the 2 bonded-to-the-shell magnets, the cracked one looses a portion of its power - for good. The starter shell is then junk. My son scored a Honda 4213 13HP liquid cooled riding mower for free because it "needed a starter" Seems the PO was whipping on it (and the adjacent oil filter) quite a bit and gave up. Local Outdoor Equipment quoted $900 to install an OE Honda starter. Was told the engine needs to be removed to do so. Good thing he had a bad aim... ALL it was that it needed new brushes that could be serviced with the engine intact. We got a new loaded endplate - plate, bushing, brushes & springs was less than $85 !!
