I’ve been told that the round knobs were original to the 6-speeds and earlier. Also, been told that the bent 1-2-3-R lever came about with the advent of the 6-speed--prior levers were straight. That would be consistent with what I have seen. The original shifter knob on my 855 is the round ball, and the lever is straight. That HY pump hangs off a bracket that bolts to the RH side of the tower, and comes back probably at least 3/4 of the way to that notch above the drive idler. I know I can get my hand in between the shifter and the pump in the "forward" gears, but that's about it. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I’m quite sure my 854 had hydraulics before it came to me--the lift lever and rock shaft were not installed (and showed no signs of use!), there was no ignition switch (‘cause it was still in the side-mounted box somewhere in the POs stash?), the mounting holes for the pump were clean of paint, and the engine had an undisturbed triple pulley. Another quirk was that the original-style rear tires showed no wear but one side of the wheels had rust. I suspect they’d been removed and replaced with Ags early and simply stored and the PO put them back on to keep the ags when selling to me. Did this on my 300 series. Low 1st and 2nd still slightly slower than original high range, but I now use all 6 speeds. High 3rd is pretty darn fast, though not frighteningly so. About 13-15mph at WOT. Hydro (5.25) front and 4 inch at the tranny. Kicks things up just enough to make a quicker machine when you need it. Still usable for lawn and garden work. The transmission input pulley’s setscrew is in the valley of the sheave and the rim runs at less than ⅛” from the transaxle body. The bore length on the pulley is 1”. The bigger engine’ PTO sticks out a bit more and the 8-speed’s input shafts are longer! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
