Found a new to me horse, 1067

Nice find. The hood ornament, interesting. What's on there?

Verify if the valve is stuck, Had an 8hp Kohler with a stuck exhaust valve from sitting. Between lightly tapping down and prying up at the valve spring area in order to get it to move back and forth, plus some lube spay as well, it freed up. This is the same engine running in my 654 tractor for about 6-7 years now, still plowing snow every winter.  I could care less if it blows a little smoke on start up and acceleration or not. Fires right up instantly every time and still has plenty of power to pile it up and push full loads. It's a worker not a trailer queen. So IMO a stuck valve isn't necessarily the end of the world and requires a complete rebuild. A full blown restore, that's different.

@Rattlecan I guess this must be a 1067 month! I as well have one. These are the first year of the Six speed I think. Just take your time with it as I am doing because you do not see these every day for sale. I hope you enjoy getting yours in good running order like I am doing. Enjoy the ride when it is done.

Correct. 1967, 68, and 69.

All 6 speeds had Limited Slip Differential.

Post some pics from a couple different angles. I'd bet someone on here can ID that cool piece.

Excellent catch on that tractor!!

I'd guess an early 50's Buick.  Seems to me that they had that 'gunsight' theme for a few years.

When I went out this morning the exhaust valve was unstuck, I guess the mystery oil helped. Thanks to whoever told me about that before, I can not remember who. I turned by hand every once in a while and compression seems  to feel much better each time. Seems to have more bounce when rotated backwards?.?  Spent most of the morning trying to free up the inner race on the pto assembly and free up the brake clutch pedal assembly. They both moved about two hours ago. One rear wheel was walking on the shaft. The square head set bolt was not tight, I pulled it off and the key and hub did not look too bad. Put it back on and tightened bolt and lock nut. Is there a “easy” way to give a basic check on the transmission without it running. Going to drain it shortly and see if it is mud or not. Does only one know the belt length that goes on the generator/starter and the drive belt. It is missing both. Thanks in advance again.

so. It is not the original hood ornament. Now I have to find one!!

here are some closeups.

figured out it is easer to work with it on the trailer. I can sit on the rail.

Ornament is not Buick. It's similar but Buick had what looked like a missile in the center of the circle.

Maybe three possible names for the tractor?  How do you guys figure out what everything is?

@Rattlecan  get that trans drained ! easy left hand bottom corner of trans center section , like a 3/8 screw in plug , filled with dirt , just dump it and let it drain , elevate front end off ground to enhance  drainage . also get a new shift boot , personally like a cleaning / flushing fluid , and some road time . kerosene / diesel fuel , atf hi mileage oil . probably milky " oil " . done a number of those . best thing is to get some actual  road movement on it for flushing effects , would also refill it at shifter point , for shower effect , 2/3 flushes usually does it . then regular level check for statis . BTW  that paint would suck up a lubrication spray down , let it sit days with penetrating oil on it , KNOCK R LOOSE , penetrant will give it vintage oil stain period correct finish . do not attempt to recover that paint , oil soak . rub it down with oiled cloth . that engine , KROIL OIL $ is a killer for carbon / neglect recovery . concentrate on basics , would run it in , on a seperate gallon of heavily treated gas , bet varnish is an issue , let us know , pete

Thanks for the info Pete. What do you mean by “check for statis” ?  You spray the painted surfaces with oil?  Run kroil mixed in the gas?  At what ratio or spray it in the plug hole?  I drained the transmission yesterday afternoon and it has been sitting so long the water was separated from the oil, water at first then muddy oil. I spent two hours trying to get shifter out. The 1/4 in bolt that holds it in was rusted off just outside the boss on the casting. Took a dremel with cutting wheel and cut slot in it for screwdriver and soaked in kroil.  It took a while but I got it out. Still need to pull carb off and valve spring cover to see what that looks like. Still have lots to do. Lift cable is broken, have to get it all put back together, wiring harness back in place. I want to put a tiller on I got about a month ago but I can’t understand the manual on how to get the belt to it. That will come later, have to get it moving first. Thanks again.

Pulled the carb off and the valve cover, don’t know if that is what it is called or not, checked the valve clearance was .004 on intake and .019 on exhaust. I also found an extra hole under the valve cover. See pictures. It looks like it was knocked in from the other side. It is not very thick and I think I can see a gear turning thru the hole. I assume this is not good news. 0D9FFE5F-03BC-4BD5-98EA-015457DDB68E.jpeg.e57285dd50eb1734e1d8f8d023363a3f.jpeg

May be bad. Maybe not. Was there any sign of the piece?

Do the gears appear to move correctly?

No there was a little sludge and I wiped it out there was no cast pieces in there and I thought that was odd.  I don’t know for sure that I am the only one that has been in there. The hole is probably 1/4 inch I can’t see a lot but I see what looks like gear teeth going by the hole. Thanks

That's what I was wondering.

Perhaps there was an "event" in the past that caused it. And perhaps that was repaired by a PO.

What does the gear I am seeing do? I’m assuming it has something to do with the governor. I have never been inside of one of these motors before. I guess the hole is not a problem since there is already a vent hole to the inside, am I correct in that thinking?  My concern is what caused it. Thanks again

I don't have a lot of personal familiarity with these engines but there's a few others that do.

I believe the gear you are seeing is on the camshaft being driven by the crankshaft (it turns in the opposite direction, if you are curious).

I don’t see any particular harm for having that hole, since there isn’t any debris and any oil splashed in there will lube the valve stems and exit back to the crankcase via the regular drain hole. Of course, having the breather and cover properly installed is important!

The reed is shot, has a hole rusted in one tab and the end rusted off of another tab. I think I know how to put it all back. I have read the post here about putting it in backwards. Need to find the reed or a kit that has gaskets and little rubber tube , element etc. thanks again guys.

I'd bet either K & B Horse Parts or A to Z Tractor in PA  would have what you need.

Both are listed in our Vendors section.
