I have a 418a i have been un-MacGivering from years of prior tinkering.

When i bought  the unit the blade engagement works fine. How when i engage the pto it kills the engine. Any suggestions of where to look? The seat switch is long gone.

I have little issue with the mechanical side of things but struggle mightily troubleshooting electrical

There is a Dark Blue wire (or black with a dark blue tracer) going from the PTO switch and ignition switch "M" terminal to the Magneto. If is contacts electrical ground ( the frame or sheet metal) it will kill the ignition. Remove your battery and inspect that wire to see if the insulation has become frayed and makes contact when the PTO lever is moved.

@bardern  while you are snooping around on any wiring , go slow and easy , chances are very good there is related , cracked / chafed  /  corroded wiring . verify and go , to every connection .  personally  regularly re route , and  cable wrap numerous areas , also tie wrap in a much smoother lay out point , safety switches and cracked , shorted wiring are a regular thing , alligator clip test wires , will allow you to verify a run . then improve it . pete

Excellent advice that I will follow.

I figured I was in for a time when there were brake pads welded to the pto friction plate lol
