Cape Codder 5 #1 Posted May 27 This machine was running great until I added a little too much oil SAE30 over the weekend. Not much, but after I added the oil and gas it started running real rough. It didn't smoke when I started it but it was over the full line . I needed to remove 6 OZ. to get it back down. Only ran the engine for a minute before I checked the level. I also added the last bit of gas I had. It seems like a carb problem because of the way it 's running but I'm wondering if I did any damage. I put a new plug in also to no avail. It will start and run for a minute or 2 before getting rough. I tried cutting the lawn but it had no balls (rpm) at all. Any thoughts ? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

The ethanol will ruin a fuel system and if it sits around in a nearly empty container it can absorb moisture from the air. Only use ethanol-free gas! peter lena 8,627 #4 Posted May 27 @Cape Codder old stored gas , as well as tank condition / debris usually ends up in the carb bowl , easy to check / clean , don,t know what your unit has for condition . like to run a questionable engine on a seperate gallon of heavily treated gas . never run my tanks low / empty , always top off after use , add STA BIL fuel storage , to all my gas . no issues . you could easily have collective failed fuel line set up , have any fuel filters on that ? have 2 on my horses , larger one ,close to tank , smaller one close to carb . hard to pin point a fix , might also have other issues ? might also have a tank fuel cap , with poor venting , that starves fuel . hope you find it , pete 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
peter lena 8,627 #6 Posted May 28 @Cape Codder have found that repetitive problems show you the way , that fuel system issue , is probably a fuel line decomposing from the inside , your fuel bowl , easy drop , might be loaded with debris , good time to change it out , your carb jetting could also be loaded with tiny bits . BTW when I change oil , my initial drainage is hot from running , for a more thorough drainage . then just figure about 2 qts , to check , probably add just a bit more , also check your transmission dip stick , ever flush that out ? new shift boot ? let us know how you make out , good luck , pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Plastic fuel tanks always sweat, so it's a good idea to regularly do this. Also, 6 ounces of extra oil in a splash lube engine won't harm anything. When using on steep inclines, we sometimes overfill a little on purpose to prevent oil starvation. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
