551 clutch spring

Recommended Posts

I'm working on this 551. There is no engine on it to test it but this clutch return spring looks pretty whimpy. I don't think it will apply enough tension on the belt. What do you guys think and does anyone have a picture? Getting an engine at the show and hope to get it running and driving there.

I will have to measure to see what's there.

It's pretty close except the wire diameter is only .03" I see the number you gave me is still available on E bay. I will probably order one. Thanks

52 coils vs 20-ish and finer gauge wire? Definitely a hardware store replacement and on the wimpy side. Look for a spring at the show along with the engine!

Ordered a NOS one on E Bay. Finding the correct spring at the show could have been a crap shoot. Now that I found one, I'll find a bucket of them for a dollar!

Here's some info I have in my stash confirming with Garry:

4.500" between hooks     4.5”

.070" wire                       .069”

.520" coil OD                  .630

.380 coil ID                     .492

3.570" coil length            3.665”

52 + 2 half coils            same

Gardner Spring #37083GS (McMaster-Carr #9433K111)

Worked great on my 400. I'm assuming the 551 uses the same even though it's a 2-piece case. :)
