I have a rebuild kit for the metal bodied fuel pump and when installing the diaphragm, does the arm go in and turn or does it just go straight in?

Goes in and turns 90 degrees to lock it in. Triple check that the arm moves the diaphragm.

I have had to file some away from center area where it twists to make the new diaphragms fit. Not every pump, but some so if it goes hard, don't force it.

@Joe Shmo   super lube , silicone based ,oil  is made for dissimilar connections , make s rubber / metal fitting very easy , also EXCELLENT CHOKE / THROTTLE CABLE LUBRICANT , check out  the temp range , make it drip out the entire length , local H/W  store $ 6  also great for fuel tank valve replacement . pete

One more point, the diaphragm should be stretched (move the lever full stroke) before you tighten the screws or the diaphragm could rip.
