Dirt Thief!

One of my uncle's lives just at the edge of a small town in Iowa on a farm.  There is a residential street that dead ends on the end of one of his fields maybe 200 yards from his house.

 

A while back, he was having issues with squirrels in his yard.  One Saturday morning, he was 'addressing' one of the squirrels.  Just after he took his shot, he noticed  a guy at the end of the street frantically throwing a shovel into a wheelbarrow loaded with dirt, and running it down the street back to his house.  Poor guy thought that the crazy farmer was shooting at him 'cause he was stealing a bit of dirt.

 

Uncle Jim got a pretty good chuckle out of that one.

@8ntruck it makes one wonder, what if he was hit?  Who would be responsible for that negligence?  The trespasser/thief, or the gun handler?

Good question.  In that location, at that time, it would probably would have turned into a discussion with both parties getting a warning to both behave.

 

What I didn't  mention was that the squirrel was on the ground 30 degrees left of the 'dirt fhief'.

 

Uncle Jim was well known.  He was a finish carpenter who probably did work for many of the locals.  One year, we visited them for Easter.  Uncle Jim was Catholic, we aer Methodists.  We went to the Methodist church for Easter services, arriving just before the service started.  The only open sears were right up front.  As the minister was greeting the congregation,  he pointed us out and asked us what brought us to town.  Mom said we are visiting her brother.  Minister asked who he was.  Mom said his name, and there was a 'knowing' chuckle that ran through the congrigation.
