Help identifying ignition coil

Recommended Posts

bencrazy

Hi everyone. I've been trying and trying to identify what type of coil is needed for this K161, but keep failing to find the correct information. I've ordered two coils for a K161 and neither one fit (further research tells me the frame that those fit on is more of an E shape. Pictures of the WH in question are attached for reference.

My best lead so far was to contact Standard Magneto but, after an initial call, they've gone silent. Too bad, because it looks like one of those Wico coils would work.

I will post dimensions for the coil in another post...

Thanks in advance! Would love to get this WH running for using around the house!

-Ben

What's interesting is that I found this parts diagram, which looks like my application, but the 230075 replacement coils (which, from other searching, appears to be a Bendix Scintilla) do not look the same as what I've got, neither the coil nor the frame.

Reference to some other posts regarding the 230075 coil:

Is the tractor a model 704? That is where the engine was used originally.

Repo then his is a yank start.

I might have that coil will have to look. My boy Ryan got one from @Shynon to put the 161 on a Amigo back to yank start.

Any of those type coils that fit over the laminated square piece will work regardless of the dimensions as long as it fits under the flywheel without touching it. I've shimmed them tight because the hole in the coil was larger than the laminated square. Is that the case with the coils you received?

Thanks everyone. I tried a coil for a K161 from iSaveTractors and it didn't fit. It was the same situation as a coil from Amazon - both of them did not fit on the frame. Coil inner diameters were about 0.4 inches square, but the frame is about 0.5 inches square.

I believe the tractor is a 753 based on the sticker on the belt guard. The engine is pull start only.

Happy to provide any other information that might help. I searched all over the engine for additional markings in case the cover was maybe swapped, but couldn't find anything.

Unfortunately, the opposite - the hole in the coils is too small to fit on the laminated frame.

62-8284 looks like a 1962 serial number.

Do you happen to have (or are you easily able to get) measurement of the inner hole diameter?

I thought about filing down the frame to fit the smaller diameter bores of the K161 replacement coils that didn't fit, but I'm worried about the "joint" where the two halves of the frame come together.

Using a mic it was actually more. Actually I think that's just what they are. That insulation stuff is pretty inconsistent the measurement varied.. You might want to emory it a bit just to clean it up but don't try to resize it. :)

Great, I'll pick one up and see if it works - will report back results!

Thanks!

Just to close the loop on this thread, the coil recommended by Racinbob (shown above) was the correct fit and works!
