njdpo 8 #31 Posted October 18, 2024 (edited) Hi all - I could really use some advice on the ignition. my commando has a k181 with points and condenser in it. the wiring is nearly stock except for some cracked wire insulation which was cut out and replaced. At this point the stock ignition switch with the K181 works fine, lights work, all good. the photos will show that the M8 has an ignition switch also detached from the motor at this time... but its in bad condition (rusted, corroded and compromised). OEM Fuel pump rebuilt but not pumping well - going to move over to a vacuum pump Im wondering - does it matter what ignition switch I use when I put the M8 into the commando ? I dont know if a standard wiring diagram from my commando 800 should be used (or modified) to install the m8 ... If I need to purchase a new switch I would like the lights to work - needed for winter firewood hauls in the dark. oh does anyone know of a good place to pull vacuum off the block ? Im thinking of removing the fuel pump and put in a block off plate with the proper plumbing to the vacuum pump. does anyone know of a nice thick block off plate that will accept a tapered pipe tap ? any advice would be greatly appreciated ... Oh and +2 points for recommended part numbers ( such as replacement switches ! ) m8-carbside M8-fanside Edited October 18, 2024 by njdpo added fuel pump block off plate
pfrederi 18,138 #32 Posted October 19, 2024 The K-181 ignition switch will fry the Magnums ignition system You will need one with a "M" terminal like this one.

You can use your existing wiring with the addition of a Kill Relay, see the attached thread below. Don't NEED to *make* a cover plate. Last I knew of the OEM factory cover plate (for engines that did not use fuel pump) is still available - Part # 240282-S - then simple enough to use with a new gasket, just drill and tap for a 1/8" NPT 1/4" barb fitting thread it in with some thread sealer or loctite , and you're golden. Hi pfrederi regarding " You will need one with a "M" terminal like this one. " im curious ... ? like what one ? I assume your talking about a different switch which eliminates the need for a kill button ? i looked at that posting from 953 nut posted ... thanks for that and I suppose I could go in that direction ... But ... the switch thats in my Commando at the moment is pretty old and crusty ... Im thinking some of those terminals from 1972 look fragile ... Fragile to the point where I feel like one of those terminals could easily break off. (this machine was stored outdoors for many years). Ideally - if I can find single replacement switch that would address the M8 transplant (without the need of a relay) that would be great ... Does anyone know of a WH tractor "model" which has a switch that I need for the transplant ? maybe something like a newer 310-8 with a M8/M10 in it ? the wheel horse master list ( http://www.mywheelhorse.com/graphics/file/Wheel_Horse_Products_Master_Model_List.pdf ) shows that a 1987 308-8 or 310-8 had magnum engines in them ... So if I could find a switch for one of those models - would I be chasing the correct switch for my commando m8 transplant ? ? ? Sorry for the back and forth on this - electrics and electrical wiring are not my Wheelhorse ... eh... WheelHOUSE thx - Dave Edited October 23, 2024 by njdpo
953 nut 56,684 #39 Posted October 23, 2024 You could use the 103-991 switch.
njdpo 8 #40 Posted December 8, 2024 (edited) hi all, been a while since ive had time to work on the M8... Ive been having problems with the fuel pump - while I rebuilt the mechanical pump it just wasn't pumping properly Ive had this problem before where new clone pump(s) off the internet didnt work out well for me either. ( I sometimes wonder if the cam that the pump arm rides on is worn excessively ? ) I have had good luck with those black plastic Mikuni vacuum pumps - I pulled the trigger and bought one for the M8. Followed by removing the mechanical pump, and replacing it with a blocking plate and a barbed vacuum tap off the block. For my next trick I needed to find a good location for the pump and I decided I would mount it to the blower shroud. 1/4-20 bolts are the perfect size for the vacuum fuel pump - so i used 1/4-20 rivit nuts to attach the pump to the shroud. I took my time to find a good location for that pump on the shroud - because the magneto assembly and plastic housing sit directly behind the area where I want to mount the pump. the attached pics show pencil marks on the shroud which represent the location of that plastic framework behind the shroud. Once I had the shroud marked up I drilled .350 diameter holes and wobbled the drill bit a little just enough for the rivets to fit very tightly into the holes. those rivets work very nicely. njdpo 8 #42 Posted January 1 heres a few more pics of the fuel line setup Notes: 2 fuel filters (those little clear 90 degree filters come in handy. original shutoff valve doest work - Im using the plastic shutoff valve near the red fuel filter, ( i might reverse their locations). The brass " T " fitting in front of the fuel filter allows me to drain the tank (remove water & winterizing). the starter motor was reinstalled.
