New Math? Metric?

I install oil drain valves with the nipple for a hose on whatever I can. The Kohler big blocks hold 2 quarts. I dump 2 quarts in and don't have to add any between changes. My usual MO is to connect a hose and open the drain in to a 2 quart juice bottle. Perfect, right? It always was. I would do something else as the oil drained good then go back and finish up. Last fall as I was changing to the weight I use in the winter and followed my usual routine. When I got back to the tractor the bottle overflowed onto the garage floor. Hmmmmm.....I basically blew it off but still wondered. I was changing one a couple days ago and watched it. As a bottle was almost full it was still coming out fast. I shut it off and got another bottle. The results:

 

 

Note the 64 ounces on the bottle. Well, either Valvoline is being real generous with their quart bottles, 32 and 32 don't equal 64 using the new math or Juice Juice is up to something.

Hope your not getting that much gas in your oil??

If you have an old quart oil bottle might want to fill it twice with water pouring into one of those juice containers to confirm. Would let you know what way to go.

I know grocery suppliers are cutting sizes down and usually change the labels to match tho.

My new math and metric comment was sarcasm. And no, there's no gas in the oil. What you're seeing there is exactly 2 quarts of used oil. I never have to add any oil between changes. I plan to actually measure before contacting the company.

Like your idea tho. I would just drain the old oil into my recycle jug but then mark a clean juice bottle with the amount  needed to F on the stick. Fill the clear bottle to the mark then to the engine.

I buy oil by the pail 20 tractors to feed ya know! 

No more add check ... add check ...add check without over filling. 

You know the only goal I have in life is a oil change without spilling a drop! 

 

Then again draining old to a known oz jug might give one an idea of oil consumption in those smokers.

I just dumped the old oil into the two empty I quart bottles I used to refill the engine. Perfect fit.

Okay, so you piqued my interest.

Here is a Juicy Juice bottle from my fridge. 

 

 

It's not full, so I poured the contents into a pitcher. Then I took a 1 quart pitcher and filled it with water.

 

 

I poured the contents twice into the J/J bottle. As you can see, there is room to spare.

 

 

My conclusion is, never give up that engine. Its making oil.

For you Ed, you drink the oil. It'll keep you regular...no, that's Castor oil, not Castrol oil.

Seeing that bottle of used oil reminded me of a customer we had at Napa. We had to accept used oil for recycling because we sold oil. We had a 55 gal drum out back. when full or DC would pick it up and drop off an empty.

 

One Saturday this guy who was a HS teacher comes in and buys a couple of quarts of oil for his mower, boat and tiller. He says, where can I get rid of the old oil? I tell him we can take it. Few hours pass and he's back. He has COUNT THEM!!! 65 1 qt. bottles of used oil. I'm like WT...........? 

 

I have to dump all of them then haul those empty bottle to the dumpster! 

 

I sell him a 1 gallon self contained with a funnel used oil container. I tell him when it's full bring it in and I'll dump it and hand it back to him.

 

About a year goes buy and another Saturday here he comes with his full oil container AND ABOUT ANOTHER 15 QUART BOTTLES OF USED OIL!!!

Well I'm befuzzled as to what's going on. Let's add more confusion. We had a different flavor in the cabinet with the same bottle. Maybe a regional thing?

 

 

Dang! You guys were getting me excited thinking I might have an oil producing tractor. I was already throwing stuff in the back of my Ranger getting set to move to Beverly Hills.

While we're on the subject what do you guys do with drain oil? Dump it on the neighbors flowers? Down the drain? Start brush piles? My NAPA will only take a small amount. Same with other auto places if they take it at all. 

I put it in big jugs then to a

auto repair shop who has a waste oil burner.

In my county you can take used oil, anti-freeze and transmission fluid to one of many collection sites. Each site has at least three 275 gallon oil tanks with large pour-in receptors with strainers. Twice a year you can bring oil and other hazardous chemicals to "recycling" day at the county maintenance facility. 

 

However, with the price of oil having gone up over 200% in the last three years, I'm thinking about having my furnace converted to a waste-oil burner.

Actually Bob, the nearer you are to the equator, the larger things get and the more things weight.  I'm surprised you did not have an issue when you lived in Florida??  It could have been the "Peninsula Theory".  You guys have probably never heard of that.

Actually, Illinois (Chicago area) is recycling plastics, stirofoam, oil and paint.  Oil I can take to any oil change place.  Paints is now a phone call and they will pick it up.  The trick is...always give yourself some breathing room when draining your oil.  Bob, you have a good mystery there, and I am sure there is a good answer.

I take mine down the street to a shop that has a waste oil burner. He's always worried about gasoline or lacquer thinner in it when folks drop off oil. He gives it a sniff! 

 

Waste oil burners are for folks who have a lot of waste oil available and also have a lot of free time to work on the burner as they are not very reliable and require a ton of maintenance. So if you don't have the time, you don't save a dime running one after you pay some one to get it going on a 10° day. That is if you can find someone to actually work on it.

Years ago we had a pole barn getting eaten up with termites.  A few gallons of motor oil around then post bottoms and the termites were nowhere to be found.  EPA probably won't approve of that now.  In fact we had some friends who bought a house whose previous owner kept used oil in a drum that eventually leaked into surrounding soil.  When they sold the house, the new owner reported the oily soil and it cost our friends quite a bit a money to remove and replace the  dirt.

My local shop does the same before adding it to his drum. The vendor who collects it has some sort of test and will reject the entire 55-gallon drum if if fails.
