My steering seams to be skipping when I turn it hard all the way to the left.  nothing

Seams to be broken . I'm wondering if there is anything that could  be tightened

Up there is some up and down play in the steering shaft  .

Look for a sheared roll pin at the lower steering (if not welded) and the fan gear on the lower shaft. A fairly common problem....

The shaft with the fan gear that rides under the engine can be shimmed closer to the steering shaft.  That should help tighten it up.

Common issue.  Get under the tractor and shim the lower steering rod like this:  For the up/down of the steering column, (1) open the hood (2) loosen the 3/4" ID collar on the column and (3) move it up to be tight against the dash housing.   Put some grease in there too.

@Pullstart  you know that  !  the repetitive  failure of a set up is your track for  eliminating it  , and its more often than not , the detail in its functional set up ! regularly  washer / shim up a connection point , enhance lubrication . usually at that point , i,m in the  WHAT IF STAGE .  between you and  @daveoman1966  , you might be on to something , grease slick , pete
