Had my chainsaw kick back and it took a nasty bite from my face.  Currently in the ER waiting for the plastic surgeon.

I'm so sorry to hear that you got hurt.  Prays for a speedy recovery.

Personally when it comes to chainsaws, I won't use anything without a chain brake.  A neighbor offered me a beautiful old saw years ago.  As soon as I saw it didn't have a chain brake I turned it down.

My wife made me buy a helmet with face shield and chaps when I bought my new Echo CS-400.  I'm 44 and chainsaws are one tool I use as little as possible.

Thank you..

Yes, I learned a tough lesson yesterday, after a half century of sawing.  I do plan to get more protection and a modern saw.  I have been using chaps for years.  This incident happened after a cut and was lifting out and apparently the tip touched the log.

A real nasty cut and missed my eye by 1/2"

I appreciate the well wishes from you and others, and knew that this great group would lift my spirits.

Wow, makes me question ever using my old (no chain brake) Homelite or any chain saw again.

Sure glad it missed that eye, a new scar won't hurt that face.    :ychain:

If I shared the photo on here the old Homelite would be put into retirement.  To give you an idea of how close it was, the glasses have a small nick in the bottom of the frame where the chain grabbed and tossed the glasses.  My Amish neighbor followed the blood trail for 200 yards and found the glasses at the accident scene.

Every day is a bit better, stitches came out yesterday except the one he missed.  Still have swelling below the eye that is bothersome, but I am doing a few things around the house.  @Ed Kennell, feel free to stop over and I will point out the scene of the crime.

Those old Homelites came with a guard protecting the tip, they offer more protection than a chain brake but since they are a pain to use most people like myself have them off.  You can bet that I will make use of them in the future.  Still researching helmets, shields and other saws but there are no perfect answers.

My dads old Super XL 12  finely got tired about 4 or 5 years back. I now have a Echo CS 400 like Bill D..I'm not twice as old as Bill but I more the the 40 covered.

Your best safety devce when useing any motor or engine powered saw Is, when you get tired hit the off switch and go to the house.

I wanted to investigate what exactly happened.  In the following video you can see a chainsaw nick near the end of the log where the chain launched the bar.  I cut off two chunks from the tree that had fallen across a stone fence and thought it was supported well.  In my testing I found that the two chunks held the log down but when the second one was removed the log came up and towards me touching the bar tip and caused the kick back.  Keep in mind that last chunk was out farther and there was likely no movement till it fell free.

Here's what I found and currently using for small stuff.  Didn't know if I would like it at first, but it's really growing on me.

makita_trimmer.jpg.4e97372845b66f8cd74aeae8670d43a9.jpg

Obviously won't handle the big stuff, but it's good for limbing and trimming up to about six inches, which I do quite a bit of.  Pivoting back bar protects face, arms, etc.  Not obvious from the photo, the trigger interlock also has an inertia switch that stops the chain immediately and you have to re-press the interlock to make it run again.  It's light enough I can tie a length of paracord to the handle, climb a ladder and pull it up after me.  And being rechargeable, no fuss with trying to start and keep it running in such inconvenient positions.  I was initially worried the battery wouldn't last very long, but that worry proved unfounded.  I carry a spare battery into the woods with me just in case, but so far I've been ready for a rest before the saw is.

I have no brand loyalty, and not affiliated, just sayin' this works.
