SylvanLakeWH 25,547 #1 Posted May 16 This bird has been doing this for the last week or so as I arrive for work... pecking away at a solid metal pole... never making a dent... turn up the volume for the full effect... reminds me of a typical work day, work week, career... ebinmaine 67,445 #2 Posted May 16 On the plus side... Banging your head against a metal pole is probably a great stress reliever!
Darb1964 1,042 #3 Posted May 16 Woodpecker / sapsucker, he's probably getting bugs that are under the metal. They take the bugs and dip them in sap and feed them to their young. They make those hole grip patterns on trees to get the sap and they can end up killing the tree.

Several years ago our power went out, turns out a large pileated woodpecker who had been tapping on the transformer for several days managed to shorty out the high voltage line and blew the fuse on the transformer. Never knew what hit him, gota to be careful where ya go lookin for love.

Many years ago we took our 3 kids to a zoo like display of exotic birds where we could walk in the fly cages to see them up close. Our brats pointed out various birds calling them chickens. Other kids overheard the chicken comments and told their parents about the birds being called chickens, they really thought we were that dumb. To this day, every two legged feathered creature is called a chicken in our family. I wonder if hawks taste like chicken, we are overrun with the miserable squawking things.

953 nut 55,197 #16 Posted June 10 When I was living in Florida those suicidal sandhill cranes would stand motionless at the roadside looking like a mailbox until you got fifty feet away and then slowly walk out into the road.
