ScottM414 4 #1 Posted May 12 Been working through electrical gremlins on my 1986 414-8. Replaced the PTO switches, cleaned everything, even replaced the infamous 40 dollar seat switch, condenser and solenoid. Thought I narrowed it down to the ignition switch. First new one I tried seems to be defective. If you turn all the way to a stop, it doesn't do anything. If you back off a hair, then another hair, then forward a hair and find the sweet spot, it cranks, but only sometimes. Ordered a new ignition switch from STENS (INDAK) and if you put the key in run mode, it cranks the starter and keeps cranking the starter. If you turn it to a stop as if in start mode, it stops the starter. Can this be the wrong switch? It has 6 prongs, with the one that doesn't fit in the connector being a ground. My connectors are as clean as I could possibly get them. I'll order another switch, but want to make sure I have the right one. Parts diagram seems to show 2 possible ones. If I knew how to bypass the starter and install a push button start, I would, but I'm trying to keep my horse as stock and original as possible.
squonk 41,067 #2 Posted May 12 Is the plug intact? Did you remove the terminals from the plug to clean them and possibly got them switched to the wrong terminals? How about a model # of your tractor so we can look up the wire diagram?
squonk 41,067 #3 Posted May 12 Here is a pic of a 86 414-8 starting circuit. The tan wire should be on the start terminal of the switch.
953 nut 55,188 #4 Posted May 12 Your ignition switch should be a 103-990 and from the sound of it you have the wrong switch. Not all Wheel Horse ignition switches are the same. Here is a series of electrical drawings for your tractor.
ScottM414 4 #5 Posted May 13 I didn't take the terminals out of the plug to clean them. Wasn't sure how to remove them without breaking the plug. My model number sticker has long been blank. I know the motor is a K321S and the tractor is a 1986. I'll look for the 103-990 switch and give it a whirl. Thanks guys!
ScottM414 4 #6 Posted May 14 Put on a new 103-990 ignition switch and she fired right up. No hesitation, no fiddling with the key! Thanks all!
