CodyLU568 2 #1 Posted May 11 Bought a 1967 wheelhorse 857 and I do not know if it's battery ignition or magneto ignition, how can I tell? Kohler k181
ebinmaine 67,502 #2 Posted May 11 If it's original factory, that's a Battery ignition. If you post some pics we could tell for sure.
kpinnc 12,061 #4 Posted May 11 (edited) The coil (spark plug wire connects to) and breaker (connected to coil "-" terminal) on the front of the engine is a giveaway. You have battery ignition. Edited May 11 by kpinnc

Trying to learn as much as I can about it. I'm a first time owner of a wheelhorse for about 2 weeks now

ri702bill 8,322 #7 Posted May 11 (edited) Nice 4 speed machine - a real worker. Do download the manual for it in the "Manuals" section... and...Welcome. Also, look over the "New to the Herd" document. LOTS of do's & don'ts on getting a new-to-you tractor. Edited May 11 by ri702bill 1

rjg854 11,362 #10 Posted May 11 That's a good model to start with, very simple wiring, without all the safety switches. Good on gas, and very agile. 4

Ed Kennell 38,177 #13 Posted May 11 Not the hood hinge Mike, the flat bar bolted to the block at the blue arrow.

I have the engine at the machine shop now, would slowly like to get this thing restored and as close to orginal as possible

On at least a couple of K181’s I’ve see with the side PTO, there was a bent rod bolted there as a belt stop for when the PTO was disengaged. I’ve not found an original so I made one This image shows the belt without the belt stop with the mower deck installed. This image shows the belt stop installed but without the mower deck installed (sorry, the tractor isn’t here so I can’t get a better shot right now).

Unless there was a horizontal rod threaded into the flat bar at some time.
