8(7)54 Regulator

Ok, you guys have already taken the opportunity to rag on Sparky with an electrical issue I might as well give you the chance for a two-fer. I refreshed the starter/generator on my 8(7)54 and put a new regulator on it. The old one was pretty flaky.

Here's the old (likely original) unit. The adjusting screws are obvious.

Here's the new one.

No adjusting screws. Am I correct in saying that to adjust the output voltage I just bend the tabs holding the springs? I need to lower it about 1.5v.  :eusa-think:

Honestly I would stick with the original if it works...

Yes bending things is the new cheap way to adjust.  I have had bad luck with regulators lately.  Fail after only a few hours...

I was afraid of that Paul. The original is kinda work, don't work, work, etc. I'll try to get the new one set to an acceptable voltage and then, as time permits, go through the original and see if I can remove the flaky. At least I'll have the sickle bar back in service. :)

Handy Don

My tractor came to me without a regulator and I’ve been struggling with the “bend to adjust” thing. Out of the box it was running up to 16.5v. What i thought were tiny adjustments have been sending it all over from 12.0 to 17.0. Currently it’s at 12.5 and I’ve been using a battery maintainer as a backup but this is on my list to get right!

Clever technique ideas welcome!

Yup - bending the upper spring tab is the "adjustment". A little goes a long way. Way too easy to overdo it....
