Hello I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a Horse with no name 14hp. 8 speed. It's pretty rough but in Texas you take what you can get. I have been rebuilding things since my retirement 14 yrs. ago. I'm a retired Tool and Die Maker. Anyway I got this tractor home and was turning the engine over with a breakover bar on the flywheel. It turned really easy with no resistance so I took the plug out and no compression. Next I removed the head and discovered the exhaust valve stuck closed with the intake open. I almost didn't get the exhaust valve out but with the help of a pickle bar and some shims it finally came out. Then i discovered an odd thing both valves are the same size. On a Briggs engine the intake is bigger than the exhaust so I'm assuming a kohler is the same. Am I right or wrong. The seat seems to be the same thing an intake. What's going on here.

So you have the better 14HP.  The K321 and M14 during a certain year did indeed get an upgraded EX valve and you can indeed hear the difference in the muffler.  Your 14HP will sound just like a 16HP K341 to the lay ear.  

 

I would suggest a full valve job, probably worth machining the valves you have instead of the cheap amazon / ebay china valves.

Its great to have another Texas Wheel Horse fan around!  Of course I'm 5-1/2 hours away in Marble Falls, so not really close.  

I'll encourage you to start a thread on your tractor. 

We all love to go along for the ride whether it a mechanical get it running or a full nut and bolt restoration.    :wwp:

If you haven't I'll encourage you to drain the transmission soon as part of your work. 

When the tractors are left outside by previous owners, and the rubber shifter boot has failed,, they like to collect water.

it its minimal a diesel flush will clean it out.  if a lot, these transmissions are not difficult to open and clean out.  

After 50 years some of them deserve it.

Your Kohler K321 most likely has balance (gernade) gears. Their know to fail (bearings) and put a hole in the side of the block.

some manufacturers such as that yellow and green one did not specify kohler put them in their engines.

So a lot of us here remove them as a precautionary measure.  The lower one can be removed by removing the snap ring.

Their cast iron so the upper one I split with a hard rap on a sharp cold chisel. This saves lots of trying to find just the right way to get it out whole.      

While your in the bottom of the engine it gives you an opportunity to clean any sludge out, check rod bottom end clearance and retorque the rod.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. So the valve situation is normal. I have already lapped and reinstalled them. What about the clearance is it the same .017-.019 th. On starting a thread on my rebuild where would you do this.

In the "Restorations" section. Or ask one of the mods to move this there and keep this as the "before" of your resto. 

 

Clearly your tractor has some rust, but otherwise looks to be all there and unmolested. Looks like a solid project machine! :thumbs:

Hello again. Does anyone know the year model engine with the throttle cable mounted to the shroud that covers the engine. It' supposed to be a 73 but it has 1.375 valves on both sides and the throttle linkage is on the shroud. Any help would be appreciated.

Does you engine have a serial number on the Kohler tag or with the spec number tag. The front of the Kohler manual has a taplethat gives year by seria

l number tag
