Racinbob 11,050 #1 Posted May 5 Yesterday was the first time my new to me 314-H(check my other thread) turned a mower deck. It kinda seemed a shame to dirty up a cherry 28 year old tractor but I did buy it to work. This is one of the paths I mow. We don't know exactly when it happened other than it was less that an hour after I mowed there. The first thing my wife said was "That could have smashed our brandy new tractor the first time using it!" I... ummmmm.... made mention that I would have been on that brandy new tractor. The tree was healthy and there was no wind today but it has been a very windy spring. The best I can figure it that it got damaged in the wind and being on the edge of the woods it was naturally reaching for more sunlight. I was just out taking a closer look. I'm going to have to make it into smaller pieces to drag it. The main part drug down a large part of another tree. Rick3478 428 #7 Posted May 5 Nature abhors a vacuum, and the woodlot corollary seems to be that if you make a clearing, all the surrounding dead stuff will fall into it. Racinbob 11,050 #10 Posted June 1 (edited) A couple days later another tree branch fell across the same path about 50 yards north but this time it was during a thunderstorm with some pretty hefty winds. I finally had a chance to get the chainsaw fired up this morning to reclaim the paths. I didn't think too much of the second tree because of the storm but as I was assessing the situation I found this. That tree is hollow. It's so bad I was concerned about the whole thing coming down when I disturbed it. It is a good 60-70' tall. I had my wife stand back and told her to watch the tree, not me. Any abnormal movements and let out a scream that I know very well she can do. Well, I got it cleared with no issues but I'm betting the rest of the tree doesn't make it through the summer. The Gypsy Moths are killing the Oaks , the Emerald Borer is wiping out the Ash, and the Spotted Lantern Flys are eating the Maples and fruit trees.
