Rustyred 63 #1 Posted May 5 Hi folks, I need help with a Briggs and Stratton 12.5 hp starter/engine problem. The battery is fully charged. The solenoid and starter motor are brand new. When I turn the key, the starter motor cog jumps into position to turn the engine but doesn't. Itstead there is only a buzzing sound. You can see that the starter is trying to turn the engine but just not managing. The engine is just rebuilt and was running like a top. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! squonk 41,171 #2 Posted May 5 Can you turn the engine by hand? Also make sure the grounds are tight. Make sure that new starter mounting bolt holes are free of paint. You can lose a lot of cranking amps with bad dirty connections and the starter will do exactly what you're describing.
kpinnc 12,175 #3 Posted May 5 Pull the spark plug. Try to crank with the plug removed. If you have a bunch of fuel shoot out, your fuel shutoff is bad. If fuel comes out of the plug hole, your oil is also contaminated.

stevasaurus 22,771 #6 Posted May 7 I'm just wondering if the starter is trying to turn in the right direction for that engine. We do have Left and Right hand starters out there. I think that should be stamped on the back plate of the starter. A bench test would determine this.
