C-81 8 speed Shifter lever pulled out of transmission

It looks like the set screw that holds the shifter stick into the transmission vibrated out far enough that the shifter stick pulled out and it won't shove back down into the transmission . Is there a trick to get it back down into position or is this a teardown ?

If the shifter forks have moved, you may need to use a large screwdriver to realign the forks.

Thanks for the quick response , I will try that tonight . I didn't want to force anything until  I asked .

Post pics of the shifter hole so we can see the forks. 

Also the set screw. There's usually a reason why that comes out. Wear on the end maybe. 

 

Shouldn't require a teardown but there isn't a ton of extra space where that set screw is.

I hope the pictures help . It's hard to get the light directed any better . Nothing wants to move with a long screwdriver  . I tried moving the two slots across the center but everything is solid .  there is not enough room on the left and right sides to get a screwdriver in to pry .

Looks like your forks are already in neutral. 

 

How's the condition of the set screw?

Is the donut on your shift lever? If so the point of the dogpoint goes in the hole in the donut.

It might help to conceptualize it not as a setscrew, but as a pivot screw.
