SolarStallion 38 #1 Posted May 1 Anyone the part number for this type of solenoid on a 312-8? Thanks
OutdoorEnvy 1,578 #2 Posted May 1 Solenoids are pretty generic. Just check if it’s self grounding or has a ground wire going to frame and get the same kind. You can get both about anywhere.
SolarStallion 38 #3 Posted May 1 It has the 2 heavy wires going up and down and 2 push on wires on each side.
Ed Kennell 38,680 #4 Posted May 2 Make sure your 25 amp fuse is making good contact with the fuse holder. We recently had two 312 no starts due to a bad contact between the fuse and holder. To test the solenoid, connect a jumper from the small wire on the solenoid to the positive post on the battery. This will bypass all the fuses, holders and safety switches.
SolarStallion 38 #5 Posted May 3 (edited) Hi Ed, I did clean up the fuse and sprayed electric cleaner in the socket but still nothing. I did the jumper wire like you said. I have 2 small wires on this solenoid. One did nothing. One just sparked. The engine will start and run if I short out the 2 large wires. I did replace the solenoid with a different style one but still no start. The solenoid on now has 2 large wires up and down and 2 small wires are left and right. (See photo) The one I tried has 2 large wires and 2 small wires both left and right. Edited May 3 by SolarStallion
Ed Kennell 38,680 #6 Posted May 3 (edited) OK, you need to find the wiring diagram for your tractor. There are several safety switches on the starting circuit of these tractors. ie seat, PTO, neutral, parking brake. Here is one for the 1978 Tractor 1987 312-8 D&A TIPL Wiring SN.pdf - 1985-1990 - RedSquare Wheel Horse Forum Edited May 3 by Ed Kennell
squonk 41,345 #7 Posted May 3 What is the model no. of your tractor?
SolarStallion 38 #8 Posted May 24 Seems the wiring behind the key socket is not making contact. If i push the wires towards the key and hold it there, it will start.
