I went sunday and picked up the 314H I'd found.  It's in good original condition besides the tires, and a few seat cover cracks, looks like it'd been kept out of the weather til I brought it home in the rain, cranks and runs like new. 48" deck is solid top and bottom, the spindles are not corroded and spin freely. I'll go over it service the fluids, filters etc, clean the deck, inspect the bearings, belts etc. I'd been wanting a hydro drive WH for some time, I'm glad to have found it.

Well done….I’ve always thought the 314-H was the perfect mix of simple yet very capable. That one looks like it will be an easy clean up and should be an excellent tractor. How many hours on it?

@JOHN C.  agree with others on a great catch ,  personally , a great time to get some  penetrating oil on  / in that paint finish , for a base line recovery . like an initial spray / wipe down with a clean cloth , let it sit for days . to soak in the lube ,  forget about it . while you are  doing other things . also inside / heat , enhances the lubricant soak . do that a couple of times , then a 6" electric palm buffer with cleaner wax , nothing rough , just see how it breaks thru the grunge . have had very good results , on recovery paint .  that dull , flat looking paint needs a feeding . relatively easy too,  done this on my 3 horses , just an idea , pete

That's a very nice find @John c. Agree a 314H is a great machine. Magnum reliability, Eaton 1100 transmissions are the best. You got high end power without all the electrical issues of a 500 series. That tractor should handle everything you throw at it. Very nice save!

suggest when you are servicing it you look underneath and check the tranny frame plate that has 4 bolts attaching main frame to transmission -- be sure it doesn't have a stress crack fracture?

Agreed. I have a 314-H and a 314-8. Both are very capable machines.

@Brockport Bill  excellent reference point , there are so many things to look at on a recent pick up , always add something that  was not even a thought , suggest a maintenance look over , think I would , do some cross bracing ,and weld over that crack . thats frame twist , generated , pete

So here it is after I washed it.

 

 

Take off the cross bar that holds the front tabs on the gas tank and check for cracks where it mounts to the hood stand.  Add thick fender washers when reassembling.

So that is the tractor you were referring to in you transmission post?  

 

I am sooo jealous.  It is getting hard and harder to find nice ones like that.  And with a 48" deck and those hubcaps you really got a nice package.  Most of these had a 42" on them.

Be sure to oil every pivot point in there while it is apart, I use motorcycle chain oil so it has some staying power.  Do not oil the friction washers on the speed cam plate.

It’s a worthwhile skill to learn how to downsample photos and/or change formats. Lots of good YouTubes for iPhone, Macs, Windows, and Android.

fordiesel69, yes this is the tractor I was looking at when I was asking about different hydro brands, was also looking at a C160, but this one won out. This make 2 WH for me now, my other is a 314-8. I'm stoked to have it,
