Only two significantly different Sunstrands  Hydro gear and piston to piston.  (Other model numbers are just minor variations in linkages controls etc)

Hydro gear have a figure 8 motor housing.... Piston to piston round motor housing...Piston to piston may be fitted with an external physical brake.

The previous maintenance of the units is a much bigger factor in deciding which one to get than the type,

I have switched the 1140 in a C-160 for a 90-2046 with no problems.      My limited experience with the Sundstrands is,  all models are good if they were maintained correctly.

As I recall, the 1140 had hydraulic lift and the 2046 did not.    Again, some used ATF and some used Motor oil....do not mix the two.

I test all hydros by strapping them to a tree and make sure they will spin the tires forward and backwards with me in the seat.    If the test tractor is not running, you can drive the hydro with a long belt on the PTO of a running tractor parked behind the test tractor.

I have a 73 14 and 16 autos.  The 14 was an option on the tractor.  16 has hydro lift.  Both ATF.  14 was bought used not sure what came in originally.  Thank for the info.

The D series tractors had piston to piston arranged in what is called a separated system, pump and motor connected by a manifold not directly bolted together. The innards are eh same as any other Sunstrand piston to piston unit.  Technically you could take the separated system pump and bolt it directly to a motor. and put it on a regular WH.  Motion control (swash plate shaft) would have to be swapped end for end.
