They could barely drive home after work and they didn't need to get a 6 pack to get that way. I think it was trichloroethylene. I'm pretty sure some of the cleaners I do have would likely damage the 60 some year old insulation in this thing. I was looking for someone who actually used something on their starter/generator.......and was successful. I found a couple of nearby places that have the CRC you mentioned Mike. I've also got a can of CRC MAS cleaner on the shelf that would probably be ok too but I'll just wait until I get some Lectra-Motive. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
WHX?? 48,815 #32 Posted April 21 I've rebuilt a dozen of these and regular brake cleaner is just fine. Do not clean in a parts cleaner. Blow out with compressed air and flush with cleaner. Best done outside and wear gloves. The black crap on your hands will not wash off. Replace both bearings... very common 6302. I buy the bearings in bulk I do so many. Brushes as required. You can ring out the field coils but it will tell you nothing about the shape of them other than are they open or grounded. I've got two bearings coming with the new brushes. I'm just not sure about the pulley end. That pulley with the goofy looking thingy just isn't cooperating one bit. I typically put the nut on until flush with the end of the shaft, place a bearing puller cage (specifically from this set) on the pulley, and then use a punch or air chisel on the dimple in the center of the armature shaft. This method requires care as these pullies are malleable and will deform easily. The goal is to cause vibrations that will pop the pulley loose, NOT to drive the shaft out of the pulley, similar to smacking a knuckle ear to uncone a tie rod end. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Racinbob 11,081 #35 Posted April 27 Got her all done and installed. It cranks like it never has since I got the tractor. The insides cleaned up nice. I forgot to take a picture. I gave up on the pulley. I looked at a bunch of videos and never saw one like it. I just didn't want to chance damaging it. I had picked up a new regulator quite some time ago because the mount was different. Instead of saddling the body it mounts lengthwise. Drilled and tapped a couple of 1/4-20's and we're good to go. Prior to this work the voltmeter was pretty erratic but now it's nice and steady. I'm ready for another summer of scalping briars. 2 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
