Is he a roofer?  Geesh!  A few years back we had a few Pileated Wood Peckers come through.  They are a good 18”+ tall.  They make quite the racket.

Oh yes! We are very familiar with those as well. They nest here on the side Hill somewhere so they are always around.

I planted 10 White Birch trees about 15 years ago  The grew well then about 5 years ago Yellow Bellied Sap suckers showed up.  Over the next 2-3 year they killed all 10.  They basically girdle them with holes

Yep. Same syndrome here. We don't plant them on purpose because they grow wild plentifully.

I don't know if there's a way to discourage their feeding habits and move them to another tree or feeder...

Tried foil streamers, old CDs wrapped the trunks with plastic protectors nothing worked.

That must rattle the bugs he's after to make them available for consumption. I think maybe the tree is invested with bugs, could spray them bugs and he'd leave.

They are after the sap not the bugs.  As a matter of fact the leaking sap attracts bugs like bald face hornets (nasty fellas)

We had one that liked the sound of an electric transformer can when he pecked on it. Apparently he got between the high tension line and the can once, found what was left at the base of the poll.

They eat bugs and dip them into the sap. I just looked them up because I wasn't sure. It did say their diet is mostly bugs but sap also and they can kill the tree.

We don't shoot birds here.

I've enjoyed watching them as long as I can remember.

Rodents, now......
