Ed Kennell 38,227 #1 Posted April 16 I am an old lazy dog that only had Eaton 1100 tractors all equipped with foot pedal motion control. But last fall I picked up this 310-8 for cheap and thought I would probably flip it. But it came with a nice 42"SD that mows nice so I decided to keep it as a dedicated mower. The problem is today after mowing for two hours, I left it running while I parked it to go for a drink. When I came back and started mowing again, the engine bogged down when the tractor started to move. I tried all gears and it bogged the engine down. I disengaged the PTO and it still bogged down. I started to think locked up tensioner pulley or bad tranny was why it was such a good buy. Then I realized these gear drives have a parking brake that works. Released the brake and mowed for another hour. A couple other times while mowing, I pushed the left pedal to go faster and when it bogged down again, I remembered it is not a hydro motion pedal but a brake and I have to change gears to go faster. So, for the question, how do you gear drivers remember to release the brake? The old dog that is still learning new tricks.
ebinmaine 67,619 #2 Posted April 16 Hi. My name is Bear. I make 🤠 ☕️ I leave my tractor brake on too.
squonk 41,155 #3 Posted April 16 I never lock the parking brake on. That's how I remember. 5
elcamino/wheelhorse 9,326 #4 Posted April 16 I never use the brake , not sure any of them work.
Skwerl58 704 #5 Posted April 16 Leaving the parking brake on happens. I usually do it when I cut it off while mowing or plowing and get back on it and, there it is, we do stuff and stuff happens. I am happy to know it's not just me! I do try to remember to press the brake to release it but it still happens but not as often as it used to.

ri702bill 8,338 #9 Posted April 16 (edited) Both my 1979 C81 and my 1964 854 8 Speed use Identical Unidrives..."We don't need no stinkin' Parking Brakes!!" Ist gear in Low range is just as good!!! Edited April 16 by ri702bill

I really like this idea, but I left it running while I went for a drink so that wouldn't work. I did have to throttle up though. Do you have a schematic for the throttle?

Do you have a schematic for the throttle? Going to have to come up with a timer that activates the shocker when the tractor has been sitting for 30 seconds without moving. 1 1

The truck has a remote holding carriage in the cab that has a trigger for a VERY bright flashing yellow light in the dash.

HA, don't get so old that we can't remember it's a gear jammer! LOL Tighten it up a little bit so it really bogs the engine down, you'll know right away if the brake is locked when you go to take off Edited April 17 by wallfish 1
Handy Don 12,237 #15 Posted April 17 (edited) Hmmm. We’ve had only one with separate brake and clutch and it’s now with my niece so I don’t get to ride it anymore. The others are hydros or single pedal brake/clutch. For me, though, it wasn’t an issue since I’ve been in the habit of setting and releasing the parking brake in all my autos since, well, a long time ago. So it carried over to the tractor with no issue. Edited April 17 by Handy Don

Ed Kennell 38,227 #17 Posted April 17 (edited) Hopefully I can remember pushing this right pedal speeds up all my horses except this one. Edited April 17 by Ed Kennell
JoeM 7,874 #18 Posted April 17 Well the newer ones have and "Old Fart" park brake switch that turns off the engine if the trans is not in neutral with park brake on. And if you are in low range, it hardly bogs at all and seem normal until you burn the brakes off. (don't ask) 1

Achto 27,604 #20 Posted April 17 On most of my gear jammers the clutch and brake both work with the peddle on the left. So not usually a problem. I have a C-141 with the clutch on the left & brake on the right. For some odd reason on this one, if you push harder on the clutch it still won't stop. After a slight panic mode - then I will remember to use the peddle on the right to stop the tractor. Just to add a little confusion - There is the C-101'ish that I built as a pulling tractor. I converted it so that the clutch & brake both work off the left peddle. The brake peddle on the right hand side has been converted to the gas peddle. Could get interesting. 1 5
Pullstart 62,912 #21 Posted April 17 I have enough difference in my herd, I think I was talking with @SylvanLakeWH when I stuck him on the 520Xi for plowing, that I have to go into my memory bank for a different muscle memory every time I start a different machine! Some start with a key, some are always hot and take a kill button, some on/off kill switches are upside down, some are right side up, some take a key and a push button to start, some need full choke, some need no choke. It’s like whack a mole every time I jump on one, figuring out what, where, why, etc. After all that, I still never remember the ones with a brake on the right!
rmaynard 15,514 #22 Posted April 17 My mother always said to tie a string around your finger to remember something. You could do a variation of that by tying a string on the parking brake handle and looping it over the steering wheel. That, or just kill the engine and put the tranny in gear.
SylvanLakeWH 25,600 #23 Posted April 17 (edited) I never use the brake on any of my tractors... parking or regular... All black hoods - all stop if you put the clutch pedal down further... I find braking to be incongruent with my propensity to progress... Now the A-60 that's a different matter... she likes to go fast, so I took the rear view mirror off... Like Bob just said, park it and turn it off...... I learned that on the 418-C, left it running with direction control in neutral and with the parking brake latched, turned around and it was making love to a tree, humping up and down, parking brake has since been adjusted and I think it will hold. Guess I should have pulled up on the belt tension lever too, or just shut it off. 1
