oliver2-44 9,725 #1 Posted April 15 (edited) Any "reed" musicians out there? So I picked up horn at a garage sale with the rubber bulb all hard. It looked like it would look good on my Mayrath tractor. Found what looked like an identical bulb on Ebay. The bulb blows air through the horn, but no sound is made. It has this internal "reed" piece. Any ideas whats rong or if I'm missing something? Edited April 15 by oliver2-44 5 1
953 nut 55,156 #2 Posted April 15 Are you sure there is enough air going through the reeds? I presume you have puckered up to see if it works when you blow on it.
Pullstart 62,829 #3 Posted April 16 After half a jar of spicy pickled quail eggs, I could make those reeds move!
ranger 1,748 #4 Posted April 16 (edited) I know absolutely nothing about these things but, looking at the second picture, shouldn’t the reed ‘thingy’ be fitted the other way round in the assembly?🤷🏻♂️🤔 it just appears to me that the way you have it shown, that there would be more surface area on the ‘reed’ for the air pressure to hold it closed than to open it when the bulb is squeezed? But, as I said before, I know nothing about these things! Edited April 16 by ranger

It threads onto the horn so it can only go the way it is shown. 15 hours ago, 953 nut said: Are you sure there is enough air going through the reeds? 953 nut 55,156 #7 Posted April 16 Time to go to "BULBS-R-US" and get a new bulbe for the horn. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_ssn=mdsound&store_name=mdsound&_oac=1&_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l170197
Tractorhead 9,064 #8 Posted April 17 On the pictures It appears to me the tounge of the insert is a fract too wide open on the tip. so it needs a harder and more airstream to work on. The rubberbulb you shown in the second picture appears nearly the same size if i compared right about the picts. so the airvolume while pressing the bulb should be identically (-+ littlebit)

So I’m playing with that range

peter lena 8,602 #11 Posted April 18 @oliver2-44 put that reed valve in a shallow cup , add mineral oil / penetrating oil , let it sit , horizontally on its bottom side , to soak away the years , that lube combo has always brought back the function for me , also some warmth , not hot , worth a try , also hunt around for a squeeze bulb , that air draw / force , initiates the flutter in the valve , ooooga pete
